Default Moscow & St. Petersburg Metro...how?

Q. on using the Moscow Metro. We'll be only doing this for one day.
What's the best ticket to get? And how do you get tickets? Are there
ticket booths, or do you get it from machines? How much are tickets?

Same questions for St. Petersburg metro.

TIA

The last time I was I saw no machines, just women working in booths,
and those women spoke only Russian. To buy two tokens (tickets),
just say "dva", meaning two. I'd guess each token might cost 30
rubles or so. No transfers are needed as long as you stay below
ground.

The tickets are cheap. Negligible comepared to the other costs
involved. You can easily buy 10 trips for a couple of Euro, but pay in
Rubles of course.

(In Europe, local currency is always to be used)

St Petersburg is easier. It's much the same system as Moscow, but the
people are friendlier, and more helpful. You might even find someone
that speaks English!

Make sure you walk down Nevsky Prospekt toward the Hermitage. It's
mind blowing the whole way.

St. Petersburg is using special coins, that you buy at the entrance
(inside) the station. The price was around 10 RUB for one ride, but
can be now increased to 12 RUB. (same for Moscou). Due to the fact
that the rows can be long, I buy always what I need for that day in one
time, but of course you can buy them everytime you travel. They don't
have daypasses, only monthpasses, what's not interesting for you - and
difficult to obtain.
Moscou is the same, but they use electronic cards, which you also can
buy at the entrance of the station. I can't remember exactly if it's
possible to buy a multiple ticket for more journeys; the last time the
row was so long that I didn't have enough patience to wait and walk
with people with passes: too busy and they didn't saw I showed my
driver licence... That's only possible in Moscou and not in St.
Petersburg.
In both cases you only find cyrilic signs in the stations; the small
network of St. Petersburg is well-know by me and not complicated but
for Moscou you really need to buy a new map with the routes - and learn
to read the Cyrillic signs if you can't.

Good luck and good travel!

Unless things have changed in the past few years (I doubt it), the metro
in St. Petersburg also accepts cards for multiple transits. Have a local
person write down the necessary words to buy one of these. I usually
buy a card for 50 transits to make sure I never run out, and then I give
the card to a local person as a gift.

This cards are in fact 2 week passes, which are valid - always - from
the 1th of the month till the 15th or the 16th till the last day. This
means you can use 50 times the metro in +/- 15 days. I did the same
as you but it's just possible to buy the passes 2 days before the 1st
of the month till the 2nd day (for the first two weeks). It means it's
impossible to buy (by example) a pass at the 5th of June! One time I
was for 3 weeks in St. Petersburg and had a pass for a complete month,
valid for all transport... except taxibusses, which are with metro the
only form of transport which is working.

Once again, perhaps things have changed since 2001, but it used to be
possible to buy a certain number of rides: 20, 50, 100, etc. When your
rides were used up, the reader would keep your card instead of spitting
it out. Two-week passes are fine with me, though.
