More Venice problem with tourists

NEWS. During a conference press, held to mark the mid-point in his term,
Mayor Cacciari took stock of municipal activity, dwelling especially, as is
his practice, on the critical situations. Tourism, obviously, played a
leading role. "In 2007," the mayor said, "25,000,000 tourists will arrive
in Venice, twice the amount predicted a few years ago. This continuous
increase makes life difficult for residents, and it is absolutely necessary
to regulate the stream of visitors. Besides, new financial resources are
needed, but the Italian government has not replied to our requests. Why, for
instance, is a five-star hotel taxed at the same rate as a house and St.
Mark's luxury shops pay only a ridiculously small Local Housing Rate?"

In the same period 43,000,000 will arrive at Schiphol.

My advice to Venice:
Covert to an amusement part and charge admission. Just like
Disney, a day ticket should be high enuff to keep out the riff-raff,
but multi-day passes could include discounts on Murano. =R

I had the feeling he did a long time ago, the first time I suggested it, but I

Exactly, he's willing to forgive people who go to Venice if at least
they leave a lot of their money there.

Oh, not this guy again. Why do you have a second home in one of the
most touristed places in the world if you hate crowds so much? Venice
doesn't belong to you, and realistically the tourist numbers are not
going to come down significantly any time soon. Either sell your
Venice home and get a second home elsewhere in Italy or quit whining.
Maybe they should move ALL of the residents out of Venice, and abandon
any pretense that it is still a functioning city rather than an
overpriced open-air architectural museum with a lot of glass stores.

I think it's all the money that's causing Venice to sink.

Wasn't there a NYT article that said this would happen by 2050, that
is, all the residents will have left the island and no one will want
to buy a home there there since it's like living in Disney World.
