Friends of ours are arriving at around the same time as my wife and I
at LDV/Fiumicino airport this fall. We want to meet up with them and
take a taxi to downtown Rome together. Can someone suggest a good
meeting place at the airport that will be easy for everyone to find?

There isn't 'downtown' Rome as such. It's quite spread out. Perhaps
you could consider the train. This would also be a good meeting point,
as the station is small.

You can wait in baggage claim... there are seats. Atahotel offers
an executive center with a lounge and rest area in Terminal "A."
There's the lobby of the Hilton Hotel, connected by walkways.
Also, there are restaurants. See names, locations+descriptions
at www.expedia.com/daily/airports/Rome.asp
Sharing a taxi among 4 people may be cost effective, but IMO,
the express train gets you there faster with far less traffic. =R

I'm assuming another couple so 4 people total?
Why not book a Mecedes Van for ?50 figuring a taxi is ?40 plus ?1
for each bag, so ?44.
Book the Van using the later couple's Flight # and arrival time in the
name of say Smith/Blake, then just find the Van driver holding that sign
outside of the Arrival's door.
This should be easy to do as all the drivers are *always* holding-up
their signs as people trickle out of the Arrival's door.
You could either wait outside of the Arrivals door for your friends
with the driver or tell the driver you will be at the Cafe waiting (if
arriving at Terminal C).
This Cafe is only ~25m from Terminal C's Arrival door and the seating
is in the Hall itself so you can sit there while watching the Arrival's
door/area.
A Fail-Safe meeting point at the Airport is the Left Luggage area (tell
your friends the Italian name also something like 'Bag... Deposito').
The Left Luggage area is at the *very end* of Terminal C.
So if there is any type of mix-up and no matter what Terminal (C, B or
even A <-unlikely) they arrive at just turn Right after they enter any
of the Arrival's Halls and walk.
Terminal C ends in a very narrow area with very few people around and
you'll see Left Luggage's large X-ray machine, impossible to miss anyone
waiting in this area and they have no where else to go.
Left Luggage is ~50m too the right of Terminal C's Arrival Door as you
enter the Arrival's Hall.

In Americanise that would be the 'Historic Center'

There are at least 4 persons in Ken's party, so that's ?44 just to
get to Termini.
And you must know by Ken's multiple past posts that he is *not* staying
there
.
Nor has he taken a bus in Rome and I doubt being jet-lagged, with
luggage and at least 4 persons in his party that he is going to start
now
.
So a taxi would be his only option and with the initial charge and
luggage fees (total ~ ?7) it's now a ?51 trip before the taxi even
moves.
As I mentioned in my earlier post they can take a Mercedes Van & driver
from the Airport to hotel for ?50 or a taxi for ~ ?44.
>This would also be a good meeting point,

An excellent meeting poing if you are taking the train, you can throw a
rock from anywhere in the station and hit anywhere in the station

Thank you, but I'm very familiar with Rome. I want to take a taxi
there from Fiumicino. Can you help us find a meeting place at the
airport.

I've taken the train often. But for four people, a taxi will not cost
much more money, and be more convenient.

Thank you. That might be a great choice. But what happens if one of
flights is delayed? Does the van company charge extra for waiting
time?

Never mind. I see that the answer is on the web site you cited: "If
Your flight will be delayed there is no additional charge we can find

I have vague recollections of there being a "meeting point".
A car hire desk is an obvious place to meet, if you can find them :-)

What station is small? Surely you don't mean Termini!
If there are four people, the taxi is cheaper than the train anyway.
All of the international flights arrive at the same place. I have
never had trouble meeting people at Fiumicino if I wait just outside
the customs checkpoint for international flights. There are seats
within view of the exit, and a display to show the status of arriving
flights. I would just arrange to hang around the arrivals hall in the
vicinity of the exit. I'm sure you won't miss each other.

I assumed at the airport station if Ken's intention was for them to travel
together by train to Rome.

I assumed at the airport station if Ken's intention was for them to travel
together by train to Rome.

I knew what you meant, but IME, the airport station can
be crowded and hectic... not really condusive to meeting.
Just in front of the entrance would be better.

No, I'm sure he meant the Fiumicino station.

Yes, which is why I didn't want to take the train.

I think we're going to take the earlier advice of booking a van to
pick us up (more convenient and hardly any more money than a taxi), so
we'll meet next to the man with our names on a sign next to the exit.
Thanks.
