No, this isn't true. The passport shouldn't be deposited at the hotel, you only need
to show it for a report about you staying there to be sent at the police station.
Some hotels keep the passport just to fill the form without being hurried, but it
would be quite strange if the passport is kept more than few hours. If you don't want
them to keep your passport, you can ask to have the form filled at once and they will
usually oblige.

If you are walking around without any ID, the police won't arrest you: they will
bring you to the nearest police station, where you will be kept till your identity is
made sure.

In any case this isn't a problem to the majority of Italians that walk with multiple
IDs anyway (ID cards, driving licences, passports; state clerks have their own ID
cards that are, well, ID cards).

Just tell them you need to go change some traveler's checks and they'll give your
passport back.

Withdrawing cash is best done with your regular ATM card, not a credit card. Either
way, you'll get the most favorable conversion rate, but you'll also pay interest on
the credit card withdraw from the minute you request the money.

If the foreigner doesn't break the law, how would anyone know? I have traveled to
Europe several times. I leave my passport at the hotel. Its never been a problem. I
also tuck a major credit card and a second ATM card away in my luggage and carry my
primary cards in a little case that I hang from my neck underneath my shirt. In
Italy, a woman tried to pick my pocket. With this strategy, all the woman got was a
bit of lint!

Why in the world would you follow up twice with 2 different email aliases??

You do NOT need to go to an expensive hotel to use AMEX, unless you consider 12,000
to 15000 lire to be expensive. I used AMEX all over Italy and France. I have had no
worries walking around Marseilles.

Right, only guilty people are questioned by the police.

No. You do not have to leave your passport at the hotels. They only have to get the
info from it.

I don't think that's enough: I'd call tactical air support.
