Have not seen either but my wife has seen The Lion King twice and
loved it. Good friends saw Mama Mia and said it was terrific also
so... I'd go for whichever one I could get the best seats!

THE LION KING!

It is fantastic. Not so much for the music but for the staging, costumes,
etc.
I saw it a couple of years ago - standing room only - in NYC. I'm not young
but I was enthralled the whole time. Just collapsed into the lobby seats at
intermission!

Mama Mia is bubble-gum. Much more popular in London than NYC but I don't
know what that SAYS!

We were just in London and had the privilege to see Lion King , it was
absolutely awesome..I'm not a play type person, wasn't so sure if i
would enjoy it. But it is touring the states now and as soon as it
comes to my area i plan to take my grandchildren..Take my word for it,
Lion King is well worth it, only problem we had was getting a taxi
afterwards, since we arrived in London the night the war broke out..

Definitely Mamma Mia. Funny and the best "feel good" musical I have ever
seen.

I haven't seen the Lion King, but I have seen Mamma Mia in London, and
it was terrific. If you love ABBA, you'll love the show- they play all
the songs, and repepat some of the most famous ones. It's not that
interesting a storyline, but who cares.

The Lion King, I didn't really care for Mamma Mia that much.

The Lion King is a tad bit more of a "children's story". ABBA isn't
gonna appeal to many folks under 30 or at least interested in pop music
in general. Anyone can like anything but if you're talking younger
people or children, Lion King would seem the safer bet. Lion King has
been around long enough that even young adults will "remember" the
music from their youth. Mamma Mia will be less of a live action
cartoon than Lion King.

They have both received a variety of reviews around the world. The
Lion King has probably done a bit better overall.

Personally I'd recommend Blood Brothers before either of them if
musicals is what you're looking for. If you're just looking for a
fun evening of theater, "The Woman in Black" is a light weight show
that is a bit fun. If one wants to be a bit "trendier" they could
consider "The Madness of George Dubya".

The point is that the musical is likely to appeal to anyone who likes
ABBA. I don't need to qualify that by breaking down the demographics of
people who like ABBA- the people looking for a show to see can do that
for themselves. Besides, ABBA has a huge following even among people who
don't remember them from the 70s or weren't born then- simply witness
the number of "ABBA" bands around. ABBA remixes are still popular in
night clubs, and have a particularly strong gay following.

Both shows are excellent. It really comes down to your own taste and
preferences.

If you are a Disney fan, see the Lion King. If you prefer ABBA...

If you are ambivalent, Lion King is more spectacle, ABBA is more nostalgia
and fun... hard to go wrong with either and go for best seats.

They can do the whole thing for themselves. I was just trying
to applify your point.

Well, which is why I threw in the comment about "interested in
pop music". For virtually all forms of music, there are the occasional
young fans that are aware of the history of the style. Gotta
20 something friend with a better 60's collection than I EVER had.

Seems to me we've been considering THAT at length, here, lately.... oh,
you mean it's a PLAY? (Are you serious - it really IS?)

Just to satisfy the curiosity of someone who only goes to Europe to hear
opera, what is "ABBA"?

Only the most successful commercial pop band of the 70s. In fact, they
were one of the first bands to use all forms of media to actively
promote themselves.

I saw Mamma Mia last summer in London; "abba-solutely fabulous"
