Luxembourg for the weekend
Dear all,
I am planning a weekend trip to Luxembourg. We will be driving
directly from Frankfurt.
I have heard that the countryside surrounding the city is magnificent.
Could anyone suggest some place-names of must-sees? Much appreciated.

Re: Luxembourg for the weekend
I have visited Luxembourg city many times and never really noticed any
magnificent countryside nearby. But I can recommend following the river
Moselle from near Luxembourg all the way down to Cochem in Germany with a
side trip to Trier, there are many castles and vineyards and nice villages
and the countryside is quite picturesque but most of this magnificent
scenery is in Germany.
Luxembourg city is well worth a visit, it's very historic and it can take
you a few days to see it all and best of all, from a German point of view,
many things are much cheaper than in Germany, fuel and cigarettes etc.
Enjoy your trip, I always do.

North East of Luxemburg is the "Little Suisse", North of the road from
Luxemburg to Echternach. Very beautiful !

Other things are way more expensive, though. Hotels, food, etc.
Driving from Frankfurt, you can quickly reach the Rhine valley, then
follow it to Koblenz, then go up the Mosel to Trier, and finally get to
Luxemburg.
Slow drive though. But quite pleasant. If you stop here and there, it
will take you all day.
In Trier, besides the obvious Roman ruins, there is also the Karl Marx
house. Lots of wineyards around. We once stayed at a hotel in a
wineyard, a short distance away along a small river called the Ruwer. I
believe the place was called Karlsmuehle. Food was supposed to be real
local stuff, which I must say we didn't really enjoy that much, and in
summertime, lots of flys around. But the surroundings were quite nice.
I must say I like Trier better than Luxemburg.

Re: Luxembourg for the weekend
Two regions come to mind. The Ardennes which is beautiful, forested
with lots of valleys. Two towns to visit are Clervaux and Vianden.
Other region is Muellerthal (called little Switzerland) Town to visit
is Echternach.
have fun
