Default Luggage storage - London

I will be transferring flights from Heathrow to Gatwick, with 10 hours
to spare in between to look around London 8:00am-6:00pm). Any
suggestions for storing my one piece of luggage while I grab a bite
and look around? I assume I will be taking the Tube into the city and
the train out to Gatwick.

I do realize just this weekend there have been major terrorist
attempts in the city.

Thanks,

Bill

See http://www.excess-baggage.com/rail_station_services.php
Platform 8 Victoria.

If you're taking the tube from Heathrow, change at Barons Court or
Hammersmith - you just have to walk across the platform for a connection to
Victoria. Much easier than other stations closer in to Central London.
You can also travel to Gatwick on regular services from Victoria at a
cheaper fare than the Gatwick Express, journey time may be a few minutes
longer.

IMO, the extra cost of the Express is a fair price for not being
stuck on a communter train between Gatwick and Victoria. Its
not like I'm going to spend several hundred to cross the pond
and then worry about the difference, esp. since its a fairly rare
occasion. =R

I could take the Express, but with 10 hours to kill, I thought it
would be nice to visit London for the first time. How practical does
this sound?

Well, the Gatwick Express goes from Victoria Station to Gatwick, so you may
still want to take it. It looks like you can store your luggage at Victoria,
then go off to explore London, picking it up just before you catch the train
to Gatwick.

Victoria is quite central to tourist London.

Well, here's what I would do: Take the Heathrow Express to
Paddington Station. Allow about 90 min. from your arrival to get
to Paddington. From there, you'll have about six hours to kill. You
could do subways, but you'll see more from a taxi. Do quick tours
of the Tower of London (or Tower Bridge) & Westminster Abbey.
Allot 4-5 hrs. including transit. If I could only do one, I'd pick
Wesminster Abbey.

Hire a taxi to drive by of Big Ben (Houses of Parlament), Trafalgar
Square, Picadilly Circle, and Buckingham Palace. Get to Victoria
Station about 2.5 hrs. before your next flight to catch a Gatwick
Express and find your departure gate. =R

Take a look at this site www.bigbus.co.uk from the top deck you'll see
far more than from a taxi.

Very practical once you deposit your luggage in Victoria. You could be
there by about 10am and you're quite central - buses will take you to
Piccadilly, Westminster, Trafalgar Square, Oxford Street, Soho, Covent
Garden or the South Bank and there are loads of places to eat in all of
these locations.

The Gatwick Express fare is almost UKP15 single, but a regular train
could cost as little as UKP9 and take almost exactly the same time.
Also, you'd probably be travelling around 3.00-3.30pm, so you'd miss the
commuter peak.
