Default London to Scotland / Scotland in general

I'll be in London on business in a couple of weeks, and we are going to
take a week's vacation the following week to drive up to Scotland.

We can leave London Sunday morning and need to be back by Friday around
noon. We're probably going to break up the drive and stop somewhere
Sunday night (on the way there) and Thursday night (on the way back).
Ideas?

Where should we base ourselves in Scotland? We'd like to get a B&B
somewhere and take day trips.

We like hikes, castles, lakes, scenery....

Thank you!!

Stop in the Lake District on the way up - Keswick is a nice spot. Thursday
night York (busy and touristic) or Harrogate (quiet and refined).

Stirling should be ideal, with the length of time you have I wouldn't be
travelling too far north.

A lot of this within easy reach of Stirling - which has perhaps the most
impressive castle in Scotland (though Edinburghers would probably disagree).

I was going to suggest a similar itinerary- stop somewhere in the Lake
District then stay in Stirling. Though the OP seems to want quieter
spots, Stirling is also ideally situated for daytrips to Edinburgh or
Glasgow, as it's a fast journey on the train. Car doesn't take long
either, but train would be best for that journey.

As for the castles, I like both of them. I find Stirling's a bit more
'romantic'- a bit smaller, less touristy, and while Stirling is a fair
sized town by Scottish standards, it feels more as if you're in the
countryside, with great views towards the Trossachs, and the closer
Ochil Hills. The town's sites can be easily seen in a day, but it's a
good base (as you suggest) for other things the poster is looking for.

I was born in Stirling, but went to high school in Edinburgh, so I have
divided loyalties on the castle issue!

Ripon might be a good stop. Nice little town, with an impressive
cathedral. And there is nearby a very nice Cistercian abbey ruins
called Fountains Abbey in a beautiful garden. Ripon is in Yorkshire.

It's a little farther, but if you can get to Wester Ross you will find
the best scenary. It's otherwordly. Lake Marie is there and is a very
nice place.

You'd see more by going on beyond reasonable day-trip distance from
Stirling - go to Skye, Iona or Ullapool, overnight in whichever one
and come back.

I'm not clear why you want a car at all, let alone using one to get up
from London.

Edinburgh Castle is way overpriced for what it is. Stirling's is far
more interesting, and the ticket gets you into Argyle's Lodging down
the hill as well.

BTW, the Scottish motoring holiday was more or less invented by H.V.
Morton, and his two books ("In Search of Scotland" and "In Scotland
Again") are still good itineraries well described, more than fifty
years on. But unless you have time to zoom around as much as he did,
public transport is much less hassle.

Thanks to all those who answered.

Do you really think it'll be better to just take the train rather than
rent a car & drive? I was concerned about having places we'd want to
go to that wouldn't be reachable by public transport; I know I had that
problem in northern Wales.

If we do take the train, we'd probably train up on Sunday (leaving
London around noon?) and then return to London Thursday evening. Given
that time period and that we'd be relying on public transport, is
Stirling still recommended? (Any recommendations for good B&Bs with
ensuite there?) How about if we'd spend Sunday and Monday nights in
Stirling and Tuesday and Wednesday night somewhere else--where would
you recommend?

Thanks so much!

It depends on what you want to see. Some castles are hard to reach
by bus or train (Castle Campbell, Tantallon, Crichton), or the bus
doesn't stop while going past them (Eilean Donan, Urquhart Castle),
but a lot are accessible on foot from towns.

I suggested Ullapool, Skye (Portree), or Iona (maybe stay in Fionnphort
across the water). There's no shortage of accommodation at this time
of year. Stirling is very easy to get to by train.

You can always hire a car in Scotland if you need to. If there aren't
stops you want to make en route, driving all the way is just subjecting
yourself to an unnecessary exhausting experience.

Amost certainly you will need a car in scotland for flexability unless
restricted to major towns., just hire one in scotland and save two
long drives, unless you want to see places on route, in which case time
will be short in scotland .
Train could be expensive but you could go up the east coast and down
the west coast.
Alternative a cheap flight from say London stansted to prestwick,
www.ryanair.co.uk then pick up a car, this could work out the cheapest
way

Please Loch Maree not Lake Marie !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wester Ross ia a long drive from the central belt, there are plenty of
castles and hikes just north of the central belt. How about using the
pretty town of Pitlochry for your base?

There is a ggod website for B&Bs www.smoothound.co.uk

If I were you and planned to only spent time in Edinburgh and Glasgow,
I would take the train. If I wanted to see anything out in the
countryside, a car is the only practicable option.

Indeed. For Castle Campbell, take the bus from Stirling to Dollar. Great
walk from there uphill, through some nice parts of Dollar, then through
woods. The OP likes hiking, so this will hardly be a problem.

As I'm 'local' I'm a bit biased, but the Ochils are often overlooked by
tourists. They are certainly nowhere near as dramatic as much of the
highlands, but despite being reasonably densely populated (by Scottish
standards) it's quick and easy to get away from people. The trails into
the hills from Tillicoultry (to the east of Dollar and better connected
by bus to Stirling) are also worth exploring.

The idea (of another poster) that Scotland is not accessible by PT
(other than visiting Edinburgh and Glasgow) is astonishing. Yes, it
requires planning, yes you won't be able to go everywhere (though you'll
find that you can go to alsmot everywhere than people who drive will go
to)- but it's still perfectely possible, as the thousands of car-less
backpackers in the remotest parts of the country can attest. I usually
find-

for transport info- maybe there's a better site?

I regularly travel between Edinburgh and the northwest coast of
Scotland, using public transport. The scenery is marvelous, and the
last 45 miles of my trip is mostly on single-track roads, in a PostBus.
The PostBus drops me right at my front gate, and I get to catch up on
all the local news on the way. (Gossip? Me?)

The OP might also consider a plane from London to Inverness, then
possibly renting a car there (Ken's Garage in Inverness is reliable -
we've had unpleasant experiences with Avis at the airport), and doing
daytrips in the Highlands.

Or - take the sleeper from London to Inverness or Edinburgh, and either
use public transport or rent a car there.
