Default London Neighborhoods? for Apt Rental

4 of us will be in London in mid-October for 5 nights and we are
looking for a 1-bdroom apt with sofabed in living room.

I've found several, but have no idea of what the neighborhoods are
like in these areas - the one that looks particularly good is
described thusly:

The one bedroom Orion Point apartment is situated on the 1st floor and
has 68m² (729sq.ft) of living space. It has a huge living room with an
open-plan kitchen and has a 8 metre/27 foot long floor-to-ceiling
window looking out over communal gardens and the river Thames. The
bedroom also has a floor-to-ceiling window with side views of the
river and views to Canary Wharf. The bedroom also has a dressing room
area. Orion Point has a fully equipped kitchen with Neff appliances –
washer/dryer, dishwasher, fridge, freezer, microwave, etc, and
cutlery, crockery, pots and pans etc are all provided. There is also a
digital television, a kettle, toaster and iron. The bedroom has a
double bed while the living room has a sofa bed and a rollaway bed for
a fifth guest can be provided on request. Bed linen and towels will be
provided with a weekly change for stays of more than 1 week. The
apartment is excellently located at Orion Point in the fashionable
Canary Wharf district... a clean, secure and exciting part of central
London with its many cafes, restaurants, bistros, shops and nightlife
surrounded by its spectacular waterways. On the banks of the river
Thames, Orion Point is close to many of London's famous sights such as
the historic "villages" of Greenwich, Limehouse and Wapping, the Tower
of London and Tower Bridge as well as the bustling markets of Old
Spitalfields, Brick Lane, Columbia Road and Petticoat Lane

Is this a convenient place to see to reach a tube station and sightsee
in London?

the other 3 we are looking at are in:

Olympia and says "The Kensington Olympia and Shepherds Bush
underground stations are also nearby. "

Hyde Park - "Located in the very heart of London, the Hyde Park Duplex
"

"Zinc 1 ...Situated between the many theatres of London's West End and
the bustling City of London is this magnificent apartment, in the
exclusive Farringdon area. "

Thanks for any advice. These are all in the 85-100 GBP per night total
for 4 of us.

It's quite a snazzy part of London now- a lot of expensive apartment
developments. You're 700 yards or so from a Docklands Light Railway
station, which connects you to the tube at various places- for example
the terminuses at Bank and Tower Gateway.

However, it's not the most central location. Still, taking the DLR to
Greenwich, then the boat from their to the centre of London is a fun way
to travel!

This is just round the corner from Paddington Station- a good location.
Not quite on Hyde Park, but within walking distance of it.

This would be walkable (if not exactly 'round the corner') to the West
End theatre district.

It's hard to tell which would be best for your needs- assuming they are
all of a similar quality and standard. Maybe most useful would be
comments from people who've stayed in the apartments? They certainly
look good from the picures.

Canary Wharf is OK but it's a businesss district so it's a bit dead during the weekend. Olympia is not that great an area - I personally wouldn't live there if there were other places for the same price. Around Hype Park is fantastic as it's close to alot of funky places (eg Notting Hill, S Kensington, High Street Kensington, Knightsbridge etc but also expensive). Although, around Paddington and Edgeware Road is not very nice. Also be careful on Queensway for pickpockets but I never had any problems. Farringdon is also a bit of a business district but it's right by Angel which is really which is being re-juvenated and has lots of funky shops, restaurants, bars etc. Also it's closeish to the Barbican, Spitalfields Market, East End which are fun places to visit. The King's Road/Fulham Road area is also quite good for nightlife and restaurants etc.

Have fun!

There are both tube and DLR connections at Canary Wharf. It's in
Docklands, which is an area that's largely been build up within the
last 25 years on the site of the former docks, with a lot of office
building. I think that the immediate area might feel a little quiet
after the office workers go home, though there is a lot of (expensive)
residential property in Docklands

    >the other 3 we are looking at are in:

It depends whether it's more Kensington (which is very exclusive and
rather traditional) or more Shepherds Bush (a bit more mixed)

    >Hyde Park - "Located in the very heart of London, the Hyde Park Duplex
    >"

Exactly as it says - close to Oxford Street (major shopping street)

    >"Zinc 1 ...Situated between the many theatres of London's West End and
    >the bustling City of London is this magnificent apartment, in the
    >exclusive Farringdon area. "

Llikely to be a trendy loft apartment - especially given the name of
the building. A lot of light industrial buildings have been
redeveloped around there. Closer to the City (business district) than
the West Wnd (big shops and theatres) but with good transport links to
both

Oh, maybe there are two? The one I looked up is on Westbourne Terrace,
just round the corner from Paddington. I've walked from there to Oxford
Street, but I wouldn't call it close.

Canary wharf has the Docklands light rail going to it.
See > http://www.tfl.gov.uk/dlr/ <
LR goes to "Bank" which has coupled with "Monument" 4 tube lines,
two of which are "central & district" and "circle lines".

Not a bad area, very business oriented, but not what I'd call exciting.
And not very central either.

    >Olympia and says "The Kensington Olympia and Shepherds Bush

More central. Again, not a bad area. Quite residential.

    >Hyde Park - "Located in the very heart of London, the Hyde Park Duplex

More central, not a bad residential area. You could walk to the West End
theatre area from here, or take the bus or the Central line for a few
stops.

    >"Zinc 1 ...Situated between the many theatres of London's West End and

On the edge of the business area, quiet at weekends. The West End is
walkable from here and there are buses too. Farringdon has a tube
station but it's not on the best line for getting to the city centre.

If you caught an evening play in the West End, it wouldn't allow for
much time after the show for a meal or drink, you would need to leave
by about 23:30.

How is the night bus service out to Canary Wharf... a taxi might not be
too cheap.

You can drop the Zinc 1 option. 28 day minimum stay there.

thanks All - it's looking as if the Hyde park one is the best bet of
these 4.

I sent in a "Booking Request" to see if it's available.

The area is called "the Isle of Dogs" it was docklands but has
been rebuilt as an additional business district + flats for City
workers. Although quite extensive public housing remains. You can
taken river buses into central London or use the DLR. If you are
at all fit you can just walk along the riverfront. About 6 miles.
Here are recent pictures of the Isle of Dogs, start with the link
and click photos to follow path along Thames to Central London

Its also easy to get to Greenwich via the foot tunnel under the

I have found a one bedroom finally here:

Apartment Location:
Holborn / Covent Garden, London WC1.
The apartments are situated on High Holborn, and just a few minutes
walk to Holborn tube station, the British Museum, and one tube stop
to Covent Garden, and within 10 minutes by tube to Piccadilly /
Theatreland, and easy access to virtually all of Londons finest
attractions.

I think I'll take it, there seems to be mostly "sold out" on the ones
I have inquired about.

That's a very central location. To tell the truth, you probably won't
feel the need to take the tube from there to 'Theatreland'- it's very
walkable.

That sounds like it's the Citadines Apart'hotel on Holborn, which is fine
- and as David says, just a short walk to the theatres, Soho, Oxford
Street, Trafalgar Square and so on.
