London metro fees skyrocket
Visitors will have to learn which is the right "card" to buy.
So along with the hotel rates, public transportation have
gone sky high.
Come to France, cheaper and one eats better.

TUBE FARES SET TO RISE BY A THIRD
FARES on the Tube and London buses are set to rise by up to 33 per cent next
year - making them the most expensive in the world.
A single Tube fare will cost £3 instead of £2 and a bus journey will rise
from £1.20 to £1.50.
But Tube fares on pre-paid Oyster cards will fall from £1.70 to £1.50, half
the price of a single, to encourage people to use the cards.
Announcing the increases, which take effect in January, London mayor Ken
Livingstone said: "Too many people are paying cash, causing long queues.
"Our aim is to speed up the whole system."
He conceded the rises will make London fares the world's most costly.

Berlin's metro is the next most expensive at the equivalent of £1.43 for a
single but others in Europe and America are all under £1.
Critics say the price hikes will force people off public transport and hit
tourists without an Oyster card.

It's still shockingly spendy though, that. I don't know about Paris

The basic Paris Metro ticket costs Euro 1.4 or you can buy
10 for Euro 10.50

Just informing. When we visited London several time we just bought a 10
ticket carnet (whatever the name is), I think it was for 12 or 14 pounds
but I forget. But it allowed us both to travel, using one ticket each.
We are used to walking a lot so walked most places in Central London.
The reason the Paris system is relatively cheap is that it is a "public
service" and about half the RATP operating budget was from taxes.
for instance my French pay slip, which showed the employer's charges
had a fair charge against the employer for supporting the RATP.
Plus my employer had to subsidize my metro pass!
More over, when you turn 65, and your income tax does not exceed
2287 euros a year, you can have a Carte émeraude

This gives the holder the right to travel free on the metro and bus system.
So when you travel in Paris and see the old folks flashing their cards
on the bus and metro system you know that they pay low income taxes.
Moreover "avec la carte Émeraude, vous pourrez aussi bénéficier d' une carte
d'accès aux restaurants Paris Émeraude de la capitale." These are low
price restaurants, I don't know the fees charged but old people can eat
lunch with others of the same age.
This is socialism at work. We have yet to be Thatcherized.
Tourists do not qualify but if you decide to come to France and retire
and pay your taxes here, you might qualify.
