London Greek restaurant?
I asked this before, OT-ly in the pubs vs. chippies thread, but got no
response. So here it goes again: can any recommend a Greek restaurant, not
too expensive, in central London?
TIA,

Cannot recommend any, but there are plentyof them
in the West end and Soho, most Greek restaurants are
very reasonable in their prices.

Try around Charlotte Street, north end of Soho, just west of Goodge Street
tube station. Years ago this area had some great cheap Greek places, but it
has now gone upmarket. There are still some Greeks left in the area but more
expensive now. I ate in one last year - good but I forget the name.
If you are willing to travel out there are several Greek Cypriot places in
Camden town, east of the High Street and market area.
Or you could Turkish instead of Greek... unless you are Greek perhaps!
The style is roughly between Greek and Lebanese, and can be superb.
I like the Sofra restaurants: several branches in the centre, website
www.sofra.co.uk

When we went there last year, my husband and I really enjoyed
Halepi in Bayswater, on Leinster Terrace not far from Hyde Park, I
think it was. Cozy and very popular, friendly service. The baby lamb
dish melted in one's mouth. I don't recall prices offhand...it was
probably not cheap, but not terrible for London.

If you want Greek food there are a lot of Cypriot restaurants.

I responded!!
I think Jimmy's (basement, cramped and can't remember the food) in Frith
Street in one of the very few Greek restaurants left in Soho and
Bloomsbury. There aren't many at all on Charlotte Street. Still some in
Camden (I enjoyed Andy's Taverna years ago) and Regents Park Road.

There are a couple of decent ones -- Kalamaras and Kalamaras Micro,
obviously owned by the same people -- in Inveress Mews, next to
Bayswater tube station. I seem to recall there were a few others in
the short street that links Queensway and Bayswater tube stations.
(The Kalamaras ones are well-known -- I found them some years ago in a
guidebook, and checked; they're still listed.)
We also had an "OK-but-not-special-just-yer-basic" Greek meal in a
restaurant in Maiden Lane, Covent Garden. I forget the name, but it's
a short street.
The problem is that Greek food isn't a well-served sector of the
restaurant market in London -- or in southern England generally. (The
north is a different situation entirely, and has a normal stock of
Greek restaurants.)
It's always struck me as quite odd, that.

Re: London Greek restaurant?
I've eaten a couple of times at a place in Moscow Road Bayswater, close to
the intersection of Queensway. The food was good and I seem to recall the
prices as being OK (for London), but each time has been with friends who
live nearby and they paid.
The friends are fairly worldly and eat there often, so it's probably
considered to be a good restaurant. I am sorry, but don't have a clue what
it is called.
Cheers,
Peter
