We have discovered a great summer promotion offered by British Airways &
they are offering the Cumberland as a choice. We hear there is renovation
being done. Has anyone been there recently? Any comments on the
construction, hotel, location, area restaurants etc. ?
They are also offering the Thistle Kensington Palace( for about $150 more
p.p.) - any comments? Which of the two is the better hotel/location etc?
Thanks Toni & Ed

That renovation seems to have been going on for years now!

It's a good area, very close to Marble Arch and Hyde Park, and the hotel
is almost on top of Marble Arch tube station.
Soho, Piccadilly Circus and the rest of the West End are about 15 minutes'
walk.
Foodwise, Michel Roux's Le Gavroche (very trad French) is close by and
considered one of the best restaurants in London. Also nearby is Locanda
Locatelli (Italian), which has a terrific reputation. There are some
interesting Middle Eastern restaurants around the Edgware Road.

I'd plump for the Cumberland unless anyone comes up with negative comments
on the renovation issue - it is such a central location and yet
sufficiently removed from clubland that it shouldn't be *too* noisy at
night.

The Cumbeland is fine. It's right in the center of London and when you walk
out of the door you could spit at Marble Arch or turn left into Marble Arch
Tube station as Barney said or carry on walking the length of OXford St.
When you check in though, ask for a room at the front of the building, or at
least a room with a window on the outer wall, as the centrally situated
rooms have windows which look out onto a shaft kind of affair and it's a bit
gloomy.
Kensington is a bit boring in respect to it's location, but a mere ten
minute tube journey to the action spots. Not worthy of the extra money as
the Cumberland will be just as nice.
Enjoy london, it's a great city
