Really? I think pushing up fuel tax was a big incentive to
manufacturers to improve fuel efficiency.

    >Do you judge the whole of Europe by what is driven in central London?

Of course not.

It hasn't stopped people buying SUVs and 4WDs in Europe.

I'm saying that increasing fuel taxes have not effected the types of
cars people buy nor reduced the number of cars on the road.

The cost of gasoline in the US is already half taxes... Tobacco is even
worse.

You're hard pressed in the US to even get 'free air' in your tires any
more... :-(

The current fuel price is way past the level that was predicted as
being necessary to reduce the number of cars on the roads.

so that's 24% deterred by fuel prices.

What's the evidence of that? All I see in the UK are increasingly larger
cars. I'd be interested to see some stats. I don't deny that the bigger
cars are more efficient than they were previously, but they're still
pretty wasteful.

Yep. Really conserved all that energy and materials used to
manufacture that second car...

I think you're mindset is seeing the SUVs but not the dual fuel
Prius or the quite large number of Smart cars appearing, even
though pricey and mostly wrong side drive. The important thing
isn't the body size (which has on average increased I think) ,
its the engine size and the MPG.
I'm not going to buy a tiny first car as it wont meet my maximum
needs of 4 seats + large boot space or two seats and the back
seat folded down for luggage, I imagine that or greater
requirement applies to many people.
Now they have made diesels work well, many are switching for the
fuel economy (there's not much other reason to do so) I haven't
had a petrol hire car in years. Not sure about emissions side of
diesels, but they are proof expensive fuel has made people very
sensitive to MPG and its had a big effect on car design.

Not in transport if being a conservationist means abandoning all
the holidays I enjoy, which it would in current circumstances.
That's the bottom line, me and people like me would vote out any
government that tries to stop us, so look at the sensible ideas
like zero emissions and dual fuels. I'm not going to
Muckleflugger on the bus.
