Default itinery in Italy

Hi all,

I am going to europe and planning trip to italy for about 7 days. Originally, I
planned to go to the most famous place like venice, flourence, roma and milan.
But I read Lonely planet which recommended me to go to Sinea / Naples for a one
week trip instead of milan and venice.

So where would you go if you were me? I go to italy from germany and after italy I
will go to greece.

Thanks.

I suppose it depends on what you want. If you have any liking for art then spend
your time in Florence & Rome. I would say 2 days and 4 days with the other day in
transit. If the 7 days includes the initial transit then 2 and 3.

If you like little out of the way town with character then Sienna perhaps. I see no
justification for Naples. Perhaps some other out of the way hill town.

Try Siracusa - it's the best little place in Italy and worth the journey

Dear Perseus, I write you from Naples. This is a great town! Full of story, full of
monuments, full of artistic pieces. The Royal Palace is great and you will see one of
the most beautiful view that you can find in the world. You also can visit the city
underground. During last world war many people did find refugein the tunnels
underground and today, is possible to visit a part of this place with authorized
touristic guides. Don't forget that Naples is far 30 km from Pompei, the most
important archeological site in the world !!!

All the places you mentioned are wonderful. Your choice should depend on what you
fantasize about seeing. Ruins? Rome and Naples (Pompeii, etc.) Art? Florence.
Byzantine architectural beauty? Venice. A manageable and small city that is not
altered much in centuries? Siena. Unfortunately, with only 7 days, you must pick
one or two.

Not many people would describe Venice in terms of Byzantine architectural beauty!!!!

To me at least, with seven days you are going to rush to see everything, if you
visited Venice, Flourence, Roma and Milan in a week. It took me seven days just to
see much of Rome. I recently went to Venice for seven days and I know I did not see
everything I want to see.

I Suggest you visit two cities Venice and Florence really it see those two cities.

Actually, that description applies very well to S. Mark Basilica, but of course not
all of the city's buildings can be described as Byzantine. Regards, Goerz

It also applies very well to Torcello, the first settlement in the Lagoon.

Wow, wise advice for some people. But the question shouldn't be just about the
cities, but who is asking... it's the chemistry!

1) For the totally focused; art specialists, etc: they already know where to go for
their specialty...

2) For the totally directionless: go to Rome, no, better to Milan to keep out of
peoples way who know what they are looking for.

3) For the art/food phonies who are perhaps the huge majority of tourists to Italy:
Florence and Rome where they can zombie out in lousy/ripoff restaurants with
plenty of "ambience" and where they can clog museums blocking everyones view and
yakking incessant nonsense since thay don't appreciate anything beyond a sort of
"lifestyle wallpaper" they take to be high culture. Same applies to parts of
Venice such as San Marcos /Rialto.

4) For for the rare "normal person" who appreciates art, food, architecture,
landscapes, and Italy's supreme dominance in these areas... well they can "trash
pick" the above areas for gems hidden among the junk or pollution or just plain
inconvenience. Or they can go to the smaller scale tourist spots where, surprise,
art, food, etc is just about comparable quality with none of the inconvenience.
This is unlike almost any other country, where it's normally worth the trouble to
stick to main centers.

Siena is OK, although it's main square competes with Romes Navona, Spanish Steps,
Venice San Marcos for yuppietrash zombies ruining the atmosphere (and cuisine with
their indiscriminate spending). Venice is great outside San Marcos/Rialto/train sta,
but you can skip it's expense and crowds if aren't hungry for the place.

Amalfi coast (esp Capri, but not Positano) can be great offseason, but I think that
Naples choice is especially shrewd. Not for the downtown spots, but the easy
sidetrips to Paestum (not via Sorrento), Caserta, Capodimonte, Capri, Pompeii, etc.
Lots of smaller towns/lakes are fantastic - choose them based on your route, such as
on way to the ferry ports if you are sailiing to Greece.

I read the rest of the responses to you. None touched on an all-important question:
From where do you depart Italy to go to Greece? Are you flying or taking a ferry?
Because if the answer is that you are taking the ferry from Brindisi, that changes
things considerably, it seems to me.

I've spent a fair amount of time in Siena and love it, but it's not on the main train
lines, if that's an issue.

By the way, to people who are seemingly dismissing Siena as a place to see great art,
I really don't know where they're coming from on that score. Siena is a place to see
great art of a special and unique kind
- Sienese art. Florence and especially Rome have way _more_ art, but is there much
art that's superior to the Duccio Maesta', the Results of Good Government by
Lorenzetti, the Baptistery, or Giovanni Pisano's pulpit? What about the Piazza del
Campo with its fabulous buildings - especially the Palazzo Publico - or the Duomo,
the Palazzo Chigi, the Palazzo Salimbeni? Siena is a great city of art that is
probably superior to any other city of its size anywhere in the world; certainly, I
can't think of one its size that is superior or even its equal.

That said, if you have a week to go from Germany to Brindisi, I'm not so sure I'd
spend much of that week in Siena.

Michael
