Default Re: Italy in the winter?

Venice: In December and January, the average high is in the 30's
farenheit -- rainy. Rather eliminates the great pleasure of sitting outdoors
in cafes and of long vaporetto rides. The aqua alta is worse and worse every
year-- a record this past winter -- you need boots ( which you can buy
there). Winter is for Venetians. You often see them.
But -- if you are hardy, there are lots of ( rather chilly) churches with
nice art ( usually rather dark -- looks better in books), pleasant indoor
cafes, unhurried restaurants. A couple of days scurrying to the Doges Palace
and several museums would be nice, although it will not give you much of the
beauty of Venice, which is in its outdoor sights.
We go to Venice every year, usually for a couple of weeks, often a month.
Have done so for forty plus years. Just yesterday my wife mentioned a couple
of places we have not been that we "need" to see. I would, and do, go at
any time of year, but for a once only or first visit, late spring early fall
is much better. Summer is hot. You won't see any Venetians. Even many of the
restaurant and bank, etc people commute from the mainland.
