Italy: parking nearby Florence & Venice

Hi,
Next month we'll be traveling to Italy with a rented car. I plan to visit
those cities, yet, I've read that parking INSIDE these cities is
problematic/scarce/expensive. I'd rather park the car in a nearby (20-30
minutes) village or city, and from there take a train or bus to the
"tourist attraction". I'd appreciate recommendations regarding those cities.
TIA

In Florence there is a free parking space at Piazzale Michelangelo; from
there you can either walk downhill to the center (25-30 minutes) or take
a bus.
There are not so many practical alternatives, bus connections are slow
and even the nearby villages have relatively crowded parking spaces.

A bit extreme --
Mestre has lots of available places -- not dirt cheap, but better than
Venice -- and easier to handle. Look for one on a bus route -- al buses lead
to Venice ( mostly).

In Florence we parked in a carpark associated with a hotel
the first time for 21 euros, and a public carpark not too
far from our B&B for 15 euros per day (inside the wall) the
second time. I recommend that B&B. Check with the various
accommodations you are investigating.

In Venice, secure parking was included at the Sirio Hotel in
Le Mestre, with buses to Venice 100m down the road. I notice
from the tripadvisor reviews that it may have gone downhill
a little since we stayed there http://tinyurl.com/yvecnb. It
was also included at the Holiday Inn in Marghera, although
buses were quite a long walk from the hotel. They did have a
shuttle - but it had restricted hours availability. I do NOT
recommend the HI there.

There is a bus connection from Chioggia to The Lido ( which includes a
couple of ferries), and then the vaporetto to Venice. Takes quite a while,
tho. Not really practical at all unless one is parking the car for a few
days and staying at a hotel or whatever in Venice.
Lido to Chioggia, by the way, makes a nice bicycle ride -- flat, pretty,
fun. Bikes to rent at either end. But not, however, for someone who wants
to visit Venice,I suppose. Luggage would be clumsy.
