Default Ireland train

Is there any rail service from Dublin to the Cavan area? I can't seem
to find any. Thanks.

No (if you disregard a goods-only service to Kingscourt, which is just
about in County Cavan).

Plenty of buses. The main service is provided by Bus Eireann:

What part of Cavan?

thanks for the info. I was thinking of Cavan (town) or Mountnugent.
Any thoughts on those places? Any other suggestions?

I wouldn't consider either to be a tourism destination. Cavan is a
busy provincial town with a lot of traffic and a few nice buildings.
Mountnugent is a small village near Lough Sheelin (which is nice
enough) but not easily accessible by public transport.

There are a few nice places and things to see in the county, but they
are mostly of the half-hour here, hour there type. You would really
need a car and control of your movements and timings.

Have you got a reason to visit the area?

Not really. I only have a full day or two - and wanted to stay in a
nice village somewhere with some nice scenery.

Rathdrum, Co. Wicklow. Accessible by rail. Quiet. Great scenery. A
real wind-down place.

As always, I remain impressed by your comprehensive knowledge of
Ireland, PB. (Unless you're making it all up?)

In fact, the entire country of Ireland is a product of Padraig's
imagination. If you look at maps printed before he was born (I will not be
so crass as to suggest a date), there is no such country.

Padraig himself, however, is quite real.

I cannot sleep, for fear that my mind will lose hold of Ireland, and
it will cease to be. At any given time, there is a high probability
that some denizens of r.t.e. are in Ireland, and if I let go of the
idea, what might befall them? Remember: I am on duty all the time,
even when you sleep, to keep you safe and well.

Hah! Fooled you!

But, PB, listeners to Radio Telefis Eirann will -all- be found in Ireland, no?

(Well, actually, no.... I sometimes listen to it on the web here in Florida ;-)
