Default Ireland Rental Cars

I've been looking at rental cars for a June trip to Ireland and have narrowed
it down to Murray's Europcar and Argus. Does anyone have any good or bad
experience with these two?

I've also looked at AutoEurope, Irish Car and DanDooley but Murrary's and
Argus are easily the best price.

Any comments are appreciated.

I checked every Irish car source plus every US car company and I was amazed
that the cheapest rate was Hertz. This was an over the telephone quote instead
of through the Internet. I wanted a compact, four door, automatic for two
weeks, to be picked up and dropped off at Shannon and the price was $592. Of
course, if you can drive a manual, the price is much less.

For what it's worth, Dan Dooley gave me the most hassle-free car-hire I've
ever had, foreign or domestic. I expected all sorts of pressure tactics and
pickiness about road-dings, but there was none of it. I don't know about the
two companies you mentioned, but I'd be hard-pressed to not go back to them
again when I visit Ireland.

I've rented from Murray's and I had no problems. I got the cheapest rate
from Avis. That was in 2001.

We frequently rent from Murray's (we don't have a car ourselves: we just rent
one occasionally when we need one). Their prices are good and the service is
just fine.

Thank you for your responses!

I tried Hertz and Avis but they, at least on the web site, did not allow a
return of the car in Northern Ireland. Same with AutoEurope. I want to pick
it up at Shannon and drop off at Belfast.

Dan Dooley on a three week rental was 300 Euro more than Murray or Argus for
the same car.

Glad to here that Murray was ok.

Diane, a driving time question. I will be driving from Castlegregory to
Belfast and AA says its 282 miles taking 6 hours and 40 minutes. I just
wonder if that is in the right ball park.

Thanks again

I didn't do that drive, but I did drive a car for a week last year in
Irleand. Except for on the main motorways, you need to assume it's going to
take you much longer to get from point A to point B than, for example, in
the States or Canada. A lot of the secondary or tertiary roads have signs
in Gaelic and no English (I was suprised how often), and they're sometimes
hard to follow. We had to backtrack to check signs a lot. You will need
someone to be navigating closely or you may miss a lot of turns on the small
backroads. It's amazingly beautiful though.

P.S. I got a great rate from Budget when we went, but I'm sure it shifts
all the time. Picked up the car downtown Dublin and dropped off at the
airport. Nice car, I think it was a Nissan, and I only almost killed us
once in the week. :Þ

The AA sound like they may have done a quick division miles/speed. A
journey of 6.40 is a long drive in Ireland. I assume it is
Castlegregory in Kerry. You won't encounter any major highways so the
drive will be on national or secondary roads. Avoid Dublin or you get
into serious traffic problems.

If you have a good road map and navigator it will be easier.

My suggestion: early start, break the journey a couple of times, keep
the petrol topped up, enjoy the scenery.

Most of the route from Castlegregory to Belfast is on national roads.
It is difficult to adopt a good route which avoids Dublin; the M50
reduces the hassle somewhat.

No disagreement there.

Agreed.

Except for that darn toll gate on the bridge over the Liffey! It gets really
backed up at rush hour !!

True, true. That's the main reason why I said it reduces the hassle
somewhat rather than that it solves the problem.
