Default Inexpensive place to stay on Crete?

I'll have eleven nights on Crete in late May and early June. Based on people's
recommendations I plan to stay on the western part of the island because I want
to be in a quiet and peaceful place with great beaches (i.e. no busy touristy
areas with giant hotels). I haven't settled on a particular town or area to
stay in. I'll probably stay the first couple nights in Chania so I can see that
town and because I'll be tired after my long trip from the US. After that I'm
wide open to suggestions. Can someone recommend an inexpensive hotel, pension,
etc on that part of the island? I'd like a place conveniently located near
beaches and places to eat (i.e. walking distance or close to a bus stop). On
Naxos we found a great place right next to the beach for 25 Euros per night, so
I don't want to spend much more than that. Thanks.

In my experience in October '02, there is no expensive place in Crete.
So while I cannot recommend anything in particular, I can express
confidence that if you improvised you'll do just fine.

You might also find Matala to be a nice place. It is on the south
coast. I have a photo near the bottom:

I think you could stay right on the beach for that price in Kalamaki,
where there is plenty of beach and nothing big. See, for instance,

Talk to James (Aussie manager) and by all means mention my name (Alan
Spencer).
It's a very modern self-catering friendly 'apartotel' just metres from the
beach & cafes and 10 minutes walk from Rethymno centre. We had 2 great weeks
there at 30 Euro per day total room cost. Your June rates might be slightly
higher - but ask!
From what you have said this could fit you perfectly!
Will be glad to answer any questions re Crete that you may have.
(No spam here, I have no commercial interest at all. Just enjoyed a great 2
weeks!).
