Default Iceland - 2

Is there just a single way to travel in Iceland without spending a fortune?
Is there anyone who experienced the Icelandic Farm Holidays farms? Any
suggestion or advice?

Thank you in advance.

You can save some money by staying with someone who lives in Iceland and has a car. Hotel and transportation might be one of the biggest expense to Iceland. Food can be unless you opt for home cooking or hitting the store.

Remember many of the items are shipped or flown in so they will be expensive. I think fish might be the cheapest thing there besides hot water!

Sorry can't help on the farm thingy. Check some excursions from Icelandair, they may be reasonable in price.

But my advice would be to bring a credit card and enjoy your time in Iceland. If you're on a budget, forget Iceland and go somewhere else like Canada or Mexico.

Hi Alex,
I went to Iceland during the Memorial Day 2003 and it was an amazing
experience and definitely worth the money.

Here are some tips on how to travel in a budget:

1. Pay everything with credit card. Iceland is the land of the credit
cards, even little stores and taxis take credit cards. Paying with
credit card will give you the best exchange rate. I've heard that Amex
charges 2% for foreign transactions, in that case it might not be a
good option. Visa and MasterCard don't charge, but check with your
bank.

2. Hostels are nice, clean and cheap. I stayed at the Centrum Hostel,
and I booked it at hostelworld.com. The hostel was in a good location
and the prices include breakfast.

3. If you want to take some tours, the tours companies are good. I
tried Reykjavik Excursions and Iceland Excursions. The best one is
Iceland Excursions (http://www.allrahanda.is/), you can book on-line
or even once you are there with one day notice. They pick you up in
your hotel, which is really convenient.

The typical tour is the Golden Circle, which is nice, but I would
recommend to go farther. The Thorsmork tour is really good. The tour
guides are very knowledgeable.

4. Restaurants are expensive. If you want to save some money you can
try buying at the 10-11 supermarket, it has nice selection and the
prices are ok. Also try the "boats" place in the main square, they are
like Icelandic hot dogs

There is something magical about Iceland. If you are a fan of
Icelandic bands such as Sigur Ros, you will feel like their songs are
the sounds of the Icelandic nature.

The 10-11 are convenient and some of the stores are open 24/7 but they
are the most expensive of the supermarkets here. For better prices,
you should stick to the Bónus or the larger Hagkaup.
