In the west near the Austrian border are some lovely towns: Szombathely with
its Roman ruins, , Koszeg, with
the Jurisich Castle; Fertod, with the magnificent Esterhazy Palace. This
area, Transdanubia, has many remarkable gothic and romanesque churches and
palaces.
In the northeast is Eger, with a 13th century castle and fortress.
Southeast of Budapest is Kecskemet, with many art nouveau structures and the
gateway to the Puszta (Great Plains) where one can see remarkable horse
training and riding displays.
Near Budapest: beautiful hill-town of Szentendre on the Danube and the
magnificent cathedral at Esztergom on the Danube Bend.
Lake Balaton is a paradise for boating and other water sports.
