How various countries view themselves and others

Pew has just published poll results which hit the English speaking
press under titles like
"America's Image Suffers Abroad"
However the poll was broader than that and one would be to their
web site http://pewglobal.org/reports/display.php?ReportID=247
for the full report.
There the title is---
U.S. Image Up Slightly, But Still Negative
American Character Gets Mixed Reviews
also adds to the focus of the report but still other things are there.
It is already obvious the pro-American attitudes took a hit with
Bush's election and re-election and some in the world are identifying
Americans in general with Bush.
But Table 2 of the Pew reports gives cross opinions of various countries
with various countries.
First most countries have a high opinion of themselves. That is not news.
Thus
83% of the Americans think highly of Americans
74% of the French think highly of the French
64% of the Germans think highly of the Germans
The Americans only give 46% to the French (which is about what the French
think of the Americans, 43%).
The Germans give France a 78% and the French give the Germans an 89% mark.
Both think more highly of the other than themselves!
The French get a 78% rate from the Canadians, 71% from the Brits, 74%
from the Spanish, 69% from the Dutch, 83% from the Russians and 66% from the
Poles.
Americans get high marks for being hardworking and inventive but less so
for being honest. They get very high marks for being Greedy, by
themselves (70%)! Far fewer French (31%) view the Americans as being greedy.
Americans are viewed to be much more violent (over 50-60% by western
Europeans) than they view themselves(49%).
They do not get a high "rude" rating except by the Canadians. Both the
the Americans and French give a low rude rating

Following up to Earl Evleth
>U.S. Image Up Slightly, But Still Negative
>American Character Gets Mixed Reviews
I thought the UK positiveness to US was probably pretty accurate,
dropping drastically:-
83% 75% 70% 58% 55%
I was amazed 60% of US thought they would do the right thing for
the environment!

After WW2, America has always been the world's hated bully and
Americans have always been the internationally despised loud rude
ignorant Ugly American.
What one hears being talked about regarding America and Americans in
every country is a lot worse than those polls indicate.

Not at all. The United States was held the savior of Europe because
of the Marshall plan and its policy of containment against an aggressive
Soviet Union which had world revolutionary pretensions.
More over, things like the Peace Corp also created a lot of good will.
The Bretton-Woods agreement also provided monetary stability.
Things began to unravel with the Vietnam war which ruined the Bretton-Woods
agreement and brought world wide inflation. Since things, the situation has
been largely down hill.

I'd say that in France the internal situation and the situation with
Europe occupy French attentions. Even the Iraq war takes a back seat.
