how to use dryer outlet in US with 220V device?
Hi, I need expert's advice before I am doing something stupid:(
I have a device from Europe which require 220v and 200 W. I know that in US the dryer outlet is 220V. I would like to plug my device to dryer outlet. However the plug does not match the dryer outlet. First, is this ok for me to use dryer outlet for my device? Will it damage my device? Second, if it is ok, where can I buy the plug adapter for this? Thanks. Rocket |

In any given US house there are two such, one for the dryer and one for the stove. Aside from the inconvenience of moving said objects, you won't have acess in a hotel room. If you are in a house they probably already have a hair dryer and if you buy one, well it would be a good idea to adapt to the teechnology around you just as Americans must do when traveling abraod. |

Buy a male plug that matches the dryer. Buy two or three feet of 10-3 wire
with ground. Buy a female plug that matches your device. Wire the two plugs together, and plug the male into the dryer outlet with your device plugged into the female. -- Marvin & Sue |

Don't forget to attach some sort of timer to the configuration as well, so you have time to get as far away as possible before the thing blows ;-) |

If it is a 220 device it would certainly work on 220. The only problem would be if it was 50 cycle only [doubtful], then it would eventually burn the motor but it most certainly would not BLOW! -- Marvin & Sue |

Just joking (thus the ;-), though I wouldn't recommend the inexperienced to play around with electrical devices and wires that way. |

You will be hooking up three wires [the ground does not have to be used in this instance] that are red, black and white. Every plug I have seen in this country has terminals marked x, y and w. You hook the red and black wires to the x and y terminal [ they can be used with either one]; and the white [neutral] goes to the terminal marked w. -- Marvin & Sue |

There are a couple of potential problems. First is the frequency. There could be a problem changing the frequency from 50 to 60 Hz. The other is that "220V" is sometimes 234V and sometimes 208V. It depends if the building is wired from a two or three-phase main. -- Donald Newcomb DRNewcomb (at) attglobal (dot) net |

The dryers "know" what volage they're plugged into so you don't even have to flip a switch, just use an adaptor plug. ************* DAVE HATUNEN ([email protected]) ************* * Tucson Arizona, out where the cacti grow * * My typos & mispellings are intentional copyright traps * |
Re: how to use dryer outlet in US with 220V device?
The plug is probably a 3 or 4 wire, 4 is newer. You should beable to
find the plug and cord at an appliance store. That store will end in wires so you could then get an adapter and attach it, then plug your device into that. Check the applicance stores some of the better ones may already have the 3 or 4 prong to standard US adapter already, then it will be really easy. If you do built it yourself you will need a volt meter to test it. And use the correct guage(#10 probably) of wiring for your cable. One other major thing. The average fuse and wiring in the house is designed at 15 or 20 amp depending on who built it. The fuse/wiring for dryers and electric ranges are design for 30 to 50 amps. So an electrical problem in your device that would normally blow the fuse may not happen, so be careful. Also the while the voltage will be 220-240 but the frequency will still be at 60 hertz. |

You will have to make your own. 2) The outlet will be fused at 30 or 40 amps and you will be drawing less than 1 amp. If something goes wrong with your "device" you will have 29 - 39 spare amps to do damage with before the breaker trips. 3) The voltage isn't 0 and +220, it is +/- 120. 99.9% of "devices" don't care but it is theoretically possible that your "device" has the case connected to neutral which will now be at 120v! No commercially made modern device will be like this but I don't know what you are planning to connect. You can get away with doing this *if* you know what you are doing. If you did, you wouldn't be asking the question... T. |
