Yes, but he THOUGHT he bought Tower bridge ;-)

From US $0.86 a year or so ago to $1.19 is more than a 20+%
swing.

I'd call a 20%+ swing significant.

Yeah, didn't he set it up as a tourist attraction somewhere in the
Arizona desert?

You'll get no argument on that! (But when you're making "ball park"
estimates of the cost of accomodations, etc. in your own currency,
eighty-nine cents or a dollar eighteen are still "close to the same".
(Although I'll grant you there's a significant difference when you're
talking about a LOT of them.)

The date of the article.

Garbage in garabage out. Note the prices, they are obviously the
listed prices so the U.S. price excludes the tax while the European ones
include it. Any rag that makes so trivial mistakes is not worth reading.
Remove the tax and you can get more accurate results. In Finland for example
the VAT is 22% (eat-in) or 17% (take-out). A Big Mac costs 3 euro here so
the tax free price is 2.45 (eat-in) or 2.56 (take-out).

Yep, you're absolutely right, thanks. I just didn't see the date before. It
all make sense now.

WHat you're not getting is that the article is about a year out of date.

Indeed! We have been waiting for the dollar to come up slightly, since
we have to transfer money to our French bank account in preparation for
paying the electrician's bill at the completion of the work. Well, he's
gone and completed it and we're wishing we had sent the money to the
bank a couple of months ago. Sigh. I'm sure that once our check is
cashed by the French bank - at what will most likely be the all time
high for the Euro against the dollar - the rate will plummet.

It's certain to do. It always does just after you transfer a load of dosh
at the worst rate ever. It's an invariable law of nature, to go with death,
income tax and the existence of rice-pudding.

I bet the airline really stung him for excess baggage!

I own shares in a Finnish company through an American stock
device wherein I am actually buying sort of dollar-denominated
certificates which bear a price directly coupled to the Finnish
price. I have taken rather a bath on the stock, although at least
the yield is sufficient to encourage me to hold on in hopes the
dollar rises again against the euro. Or the company goes
gangbusters and the price rises enough to swamp the exchange
rate. Yeah, sure.

The Economist text addresses the question of price differences
due to taxes, tariffs, profit margins and such things as rents.
thus it is unfair to call it a trivial mistake. You may disagree
with The Economist's decision as to whether to try to include
these things, but you cannot call it a "trivial mistake":
"significant misassumption", perhaps.
