How many days in Rome?
I realize it is a vague kind of question, but I know nothing about Rome
and need to decide, for how many days to break journey there. So any guidance is appreciated. Allowing one day for jet-lag and to orient ourselves, how many days at minimum are needed to get see Rome? |

I once did a bus tour and run through the Vatican Museum in a day with an hour left over to see if Audrey Hepburn was waitng for me at the Spanish Steps. I would not recommend that. If I was doing it and wanted to spend alot of time in the museums; I would get a 0815 ticket, rent an audioguide inside and beeline straight to the Sistine Chapel. After the Chapel backtrack thru the museums. [The Chapel becomes a very crowded shoulder-to-shoulder mob scene during the day, if you want to enjoy the art try to go early. Going later before closing used to be another option but with the later 1000 opening time I don't know.] Or you could whirlwind it in a halfday by either getting a reserved early AM museum ticket or going later in the day before the ticket office closes but not too late or they will close before you enter. Then just hit a few highlights in the museum and follow the signs to the Sistine Chapel (Chapelle Sistina?). In the Chapel exit in the far right corner thru the door that says 'Tour Groups Only' (nobody minds or checks also you couldn't have an audioguide if you do this). This will take you directly into St. Peter's Basilica saving you a long walk back thru the Museums & around the Vatican Walls. Plus you will bypass the often long Security Queue for St. Peter's Basilica. Postings get mislaid and delayed. Even if someone provides the "authoritative" answer to a question, that does not imply that everyone received it. The only nonstop (8 hours) is an airline called Eurofly that I haven't heard of. Other options are 11-12 hour 1-connection flights from Emirates, Qatar, and Alitalia. |

If flying into and out of Rome, then 3 at the start and 1 full day at the end. the 2nd option is a preferred one. As you may learn of something you would have liked to see and missed in the first visit. |

How many days you need depends on what you want to see. You could easily spend a year in Rome and not see all that it has to offer. I suggest you get a good travel guidebook to see what the options are. Rick Steves has a book that would interest you because he gives ideals for people who have only a certain number of days to spend in Rome. |

I am avoiding that part of the world at that time due to serious terror threat. Chances are that something *will* happen in Iran, Iraq, etc and major European cities *will* be most vulnerable targets. |

I believe that with the prospect of Iraq getting worse, plus US attack on Iran, terror attacks in major European cities are serious concern. Americans should be doubly concerned. An individual could visit any place, even Kabul or Basra, and have a good chance of returning unharmed. But your chances would be better in Helsinki or Kyoto. :) You have to decide your own risks. I have not researched Spain/ETA and I don't know how Americans would be viewed. : Keeping Rome in mind, when was the last terrorist attack where Americans : were targeted? History is a poor guide because circumstances and enemies change. Once Germany, Japan, Italy, and Vietnam were enemies; today they are not. My risk assessment of Rome is based upon recent circumstances, proximity to Middle East, growth of Jihadi cells, as well as the likelihood of bigger mess in Iraq and a US attack on Iran. This is not prediction, just risk assessment. If you visit Rome, or Beirut, you'd probably be fine. Most residents of NYC were unhurt on 9/11 too. :) |
