I am thinking of travelling to from Dublin to Brussels possibly for new
years and was wondering how far is Charleroi airport, roughly, from the
grand place area? Flights are with ryan air (or "ryan where?" as
they're affectionately known in ireland) and experience has thought me
it can take you longer and cost you more to travel from the airport to
your hotel than from country to country! Has anyone made this journey
and if so how long, how much etc. Thank you

According to the airport web site it is 46km from Brussels. It is probably
closer to France.

That would make it about 10 KM nearer Brussels than
Stansted is to London
So what's all the fuss about its location?

the fuss is that Charleroi is quite a bit of a rural location with no
real mass transit or convenient connections.

You've got 2 options to go from the airport till Brussels.
The first option is the Ryanair shuttlebus; all information about you
find it on the website of the airport.
http://www.charleroi-airport.com/
However, the bus brings you to the Brussels southstation "Brussel
Zuid/Bruxelles Midi) and is still not the heart of Brussels.
2nd option is to take the citybus line A and then in station of
Charleroi Sud the train to Brussels (Central, which is very close of
Grand Place/Grote Markt).
For both options you must take, included transfer, waiting time,
walking time and so much 2 hours.
A really better option is using Air Lingus, which is flying to Brussels
National airport: inside the airport you find the trainstation and the
direct trip brings you in less than 15 minutes (distance is only 15 km)
to Brussels Central station (or other stations of course).
When you make the total price and time, then you better to go to
Brussels National Airport (Zaventem). BTW: this is a class 1 airport
and is never closed due to fog: Charleroi airport is in this time of
the year more than once closed due to weathercircumstances...

Well, I for one wouldn't use Stansted, because it is too far out in the
sticks despite the fact that, unlike most of Ryanair's airports, it was
chosen because it had good links to the Capital it is supposed to serve.
