Default How does a lady dress for Verona Italy Arena opera.

My wife and her two sisters have tickets to an evening opera performance in
Verona Italy on June 21/03.

They are concerned with what to wear (formal or informal etc.)

Any advice would be appreciated.

I have attended a few opera performances in the Verona amphitheatre, and
found them to be very enjoyable experiences. As far as dress code is
concerned, I have noticed that the majority wore casual summer outfits,
specially those who sat on the tiers. So the answer to your question would
be - casual summer outfit - unless your wife and her sisters were to be
sitting in the carpeted stalls, on the ground floor right behind the
conductor. People sitting there would want to feel separated from "the other
half", and would want to be seen in their finest garments. The chances of
rain are very small, but do bring an umbrella, just in case: there is
absolutely no shelter from cloud bursts.

Do you have a "poltrona" or are you to be seated with the hoi poloi?

If you have a ticket for a poltrona, then dress up, otherwise -- join the hoi
poloi

Matthew! Please quote correctly. It's, "Oh, modified rapture".

That's specific to "The Mikado." Expressions of "Rapture!" and "Horror!"
abound throughout the entire G&S canon.

Don't you like to be specific?

In this instance, I'd rather be aesthetic.

It's an outdoor opera, and the patrons who have first-come first-seated
step seats often wait in line for hours in the hot sun to get good
seats. As you can imagine, these people are not dressed to the nines.
Some of the people with reserved seats get themselves a bit more dressed
up, but in general it's not a dressy event.

I agree. We were there last July.

If you are up in the general admission stands. Dress in whatever you like
and remember they are packed-in really tight and you become very intimate
with your seat mates - this can be good or bad depending on your seat mates.
Most people lined up and sat for some time in general admission, many had
snacks and food with them. Most people were in very casual clothes -
primarily t-shirts, shorts, sandals etc. We were overdressed.

In the reserved seating I observed just about everything short of formal
wear. My general impression was that people looked nicely dressed, many men
in ties, sports jackets - but definitely not formal. But you could probably
wear anything you feel comfortable with.
