Default How do you pronounce "Schiphol"

as in the airport of Amsterdam. I was on the train from Paris, which
makes a stop there, and I could swear they pronounced it "skipple."

Close enough.
The "ch" in Dutch is pronounced as a "g", so a "k" is close enough. The
"hol" would be like "hole" in English but with a short "o". I think
'skipple' comes pretty close to that ;-)

You mean like a Dutch g, do you? . I think the ch is an "ach Laut" as in
"Loch Ness". Or am I wrong?

The "sch" is close to "schk" --- only one of the phonetic difficulties of
the "Nederlands taal." That makes Schiphol sound more like "Schkipple." Say
it five times, fast.

OK - just one packet of tissues used up for that little exercise. I
will have to buy more for the "Acht en tachtig prachtige graachten"
challenge.

I've always heard the 'hol' part pronounced more. In skipple it's hardly
pronounced at all. Nex

Sometimes the 'g' is the same as the 'ch', other times it takes different
forms (plantage - soft and Frenchy, Hengelo - like it looks, etc.).
