Default Hotels in Venice?????

I have found so much wonderful info for my trip to Italy next spring. A blanket thank you to all!

I do have a specific question concerning hotels in Venice. I have been recommended to two - Hotel Columbina and Hotel Galleria.

Can anyone give me any experienced based opinions on either?

In the alternative, does anyone have a hotel in mind that they thought could not be beat? I require a double room with a bathroom/shower and would love a view of a canal/waterway.

Thank you in advance,
Sheryl

Hotel Marconi at Rialto and room #101 or #102, as they have incredible
balcony view right on the Grand Canal at Rialto. #101 is huge. The
staff is very good. In 2000 October it was around $225/night.

They respond timely to E-MAIL requests, I did the entire process via
E-MAIL.

Combine this with a meal at Graspa de Uva... hard to beat.

I strongly recommend a b&b called Palazzo Lion Morosini - which is very close to Ponte di Rialto, has a private view on the canal - very quiet at night and it's a palace of 1600 with huge rooms and reasonable price (Palazzo Lion Morosini Guest House Cannaregio SG.Grisostomo 5700 Venezia

Hello,

we were in Venice in 2000 and stayed in the Metropole Hotel. This is a great
hotel and we will stay there again when we go to Venice!
Fantastic rooms with antique, great breakfast-buffet, great service and if
you want to, you can ask for a room with a view over the canal.

Succes and have a great stay,
Liesbeth.

My personal favorite is the Pensione Accademia. I enjoy staying at smaller hotels where you are not so isolated from the culture of the city. This little hotel (20 or so rooms) was just off the main channel on it's own peninsula. You are surrounded and immersed in Venice. I will stay nowhere else.

The rooms were simply furnished and small (as most rooms are in Venice), but were spotlessly clean and the staff was very helpful. There is a cute local restaurant across a side canal that was amazingly tolerant of my phrase book Italian. A little pastry shop, a block or so away, provided a wonderful stash of quick snacks and lunch-on-the-go items.
My mother-in-law, who was traveling with my wife and I, received a larger room on the top floor. It was nested into the rafters of the building, but had several small rooms that would have been perfect if traveling with children.

If you are a fan at all of modern art, do not miss the Gugenheim Modern (hers) on the Grand Canal. It is small, but one of my favorite museums in the world, along with the Tate Modern in London (my tastes lean toward the modern, if you couldn't tell).

This hotel is listed on the Karen Brown website here:

Default Venice Hotel

Thank you all for pointing me in many good directions.

The Hotel Marconi looked like a dream, but it was a little out of my budget at $300 / night.

Thank you again.

This is a fine example of 'Euro' inflation, it was listed at $200/nite
in Oct of 2000.

Id E-MAIL them, they came down from that rate for me, its really a great
experience spending the night on the Grand Canal.

If you are traveling soon you can halve that amount. Email the Marconi.

Hi,

Last year we stayed at the La Residenza in Venice. It is about a 5
minute walk to St. Marks, and about 2 blocks off the canal. Very
nice, quiet, a great breakfast, modern, and about 250,000 Lira a
night. We would return.

Let me know if you have further questions.

On a European trip in Jan 02 in Venice we stayed at the Hotel
Art Deco. Extreamly good and value for money. Newly renavated, 10
rooms, ideally situated just off Campo San Simmon, very close to
Academiea, close to Rialto & San Marco. Use the Academiea or San
Samual vapparatto stops.

It was about E70/night at that time.

Many thanks for everyone's help. I have booked at Hotel Galleria - its a double room with a window (alas, no balcony) on the Grand Canal. I do believe the location is fairly decent - next to the Accademia and at $145 US per night it is within my budget. Keep your fingers crossed for me.
