Default Hotels in Nice

Hi,

Can anyone recommend a good clean (reasonably priced) hotel in central Nice?

Thanks,

Sky.

don't know if it is still reasonable but we once stayed in the Windsor
and loved the garden for breakfast, the restaurant and the location.
The rooms are sort of hokey modern

It's not cheap, over 100 euros. I agree the garden is nice, but the art in
the room I had was hideous and I could have lived without the rocket
countdown in the elevator. The whole place is just too corny for me and I
really think it is overrated. I prefer La Malmaison down the boulevard
Victor Hugo. I just paid 85 euros, but that was off season in March. I don't
think you're going to find a three star hotel in central Nice for less than
that. I'd try to find a two star hotel to save money. Some of them can be
quite decent.

You might look at Hotel Gounod (http://www.gounod-nice.com/en/index.htm)
the owner shows up here from time to time and is a very helpful and
responsible (ie no spam) participant. I have not used the hotel but it
looks good and is rated 3 stars. (FWIW)

A great cheap hotel (with a/c) is the Solara. It's right on top of the
pedestrian zone, a block from the beach. TV, minibar, very nice owners,
though they don't speak much English. Bright rooms, though a couple are a
bit small.

Look at www.4travelhotels.com for Nice. They list quite a few including the
Gonoud at various price ranges. Don't wait too late. Things in Nice fill up
quickly.

It would help if you could be a bit more specific about your
requirements (location near the sea? a place with character? a clean,
basic place to sleep? staff that speaks English?)

When traveling on business I have stayed at the Hotel Ibis near the
train station. Zero charm, small but clean and well-kept room with
private bath, television, and in-room phone. Around EUR 65 per night.
Neighborhood is just slightly scruffy (some "adult entertainment"
establishments nearby) but seems safe.

I have also stayed at the Mercure across the street from Notre Dame.
This is a slightly higher-class chain that is run by the same company
(Accor) as the Ibis. More expensive (about EUR 85 if memory serves)
and a little nicer overall.

I've stayed at the Windsor and loved it. We had room 8, which has a
private terrace with steps leading down to the gardens and swimming
pool.

However my choice would the the Hotel Primotel Suisse. It is at the
end of the promenade next to the old town. Location is perfect, and
as it is just on the headland, the rooms on the upper floors have the
most amazing view of the town, along the full length of the promenade.

The most expensive rooms when I last went were about £69, so less than
$100. They are simple and clean.

We've stayed at Le Grimaldi in 2001 and the Mercure Promenade des Anglais
about 2 months ago. Le Grimaldi was good but the furnishings and carpet
needed updating, not for style, they were worn out. I would recommend Le
Grimaldi but not the Mercure. We've stayed at several other Accor hotels and
this particular one was sub-standard. The breakfast was horrid at the
Mercure and the service was poor. Nice, on the other hand, was wonderful.
Have a great trip.
