Default Hotel in Naples Italy

My husband and I will be arriving in Naples at 7 pm. I'm looking for a hotel (around
$100 or a bit more) either in Naples or on the out skirts (within a 30 minute drive
from the airport). A safe area is of particular importance due to the fact that my
husband will want to walk around that night. We'll only be in Naples for our arrival
and departure (close to the airport) and traveling the the Amalfi Coast, Capri, etc.
Any advice on those areas (or others) would be great. Also, we love the old towns.

Hi...We're planning a similar trip this summer, and here's what I've decided. I was going to stay in Naples the first night for the same reason--convenience--but then realized that Sorrento is really only about a half hour away by car (a little longer by train) and it is a wonderful walkable and safe town (as you probably know). For our return trip (7AM) we will be unfortunately in the Holiday Inn Direzionale which I guess is the closest to the airport and not in a fun area at all.
Here's one of many sites to look for Sorrento hotels:

Hope this helps.

If you spend the first night in Naples, make sure you book a hotel that is nowhere
near the train station. This is a rough area, and most first-comers to Naples are
shocked when they see it. I made a mistake of checking into a place only to discover
it doubled as a brothel. Not good.

Positano is one of the most popular towns on the Amalfi coast, with good reason. It
is wonderful! Amalfi itself is also nice. Are you planning on driving along the coast
road? If so, prepare your nerves!

Sorrento has a fantastic location on the edge of a sea cliff, and there is plenty to
see and do there.

I was dissappointed Capri, due to the enormous crowds of tourists there. Found that
we had to queue for everything, and that was in early October. The other island
Ischia (spelling?) is much quieter, and I thoroughly enjoyed nights stay there,
although not many people spoke English.

Great part of Italy. Don't forget to have some fresh Napoli pizza with the chopped
tomatoes. Fantastic!

I have two days -- one will be spent doing Pompeii etc TEST should I spend the other
going to Positano or Ischia [will be staying in sorrento 3 nights]? Or could I do
Positano in the morning and hang out in Sorrento in the afternoon?

I don't recommend driving on the Amalfi Drive, but the reason is not so much that
it's nervewracking. The reason is that it takes all the driver's concentration, and
he really can't appreciate the spectacular views. I recommend taking the local bus.

Most people seem to love Sorrento, but I don't particularly like
it. It's a very convenient place to stay and use as a base for seeing the surrounding
area, but I find Sorrento itself kind of faded and uninteresting. It must have
been wonderful in its day, but its day has passed.

I, on the other hand, love Capri, and have been there half a dozen times, sometimes
staying for as much as a week. But we always make a point of going in the winter, out
of season, when there are far fewer tourists.

Despite the tourists "Deep Fried Mars" complains about, I would still choose to spend
your second day on Capri.

I would recommend taking the bus to Positano from Sorrento, and catch the last boat
back in the evening. It is an amazing boat trip around sunset.

A year or two back, I stayed a few days at the large, decayed, cheap, friendly Hotel
Eden a few yards from the rail-station. I enjoyed my stay there, but I hesitate to
recommend it as others may be more troubled by a little dirt than I. I wandered
around the area in the evening, seeking my supper, and did not see then, or at other
times, significantly more ladies of the night than in other large European cities.
Nor did I feel under threat of violence or theft.

Naples, there and elsewhere, is notable for a more obvious disregard of the laws
relating to driving and to paying tobacco duty than other cities. It is not always
easy to cross the road.

I found it, however, a fascinating, exciting dynamic city, with much in the way of
historic buildings and museums to enjoy.

They appeared then to be building a new metro line to add to the existing one. Has it
ever been completed?

Fully agree with everything you say - except my advice is not to spend any nights in
Naples! Go there, guided, during the day by all means. In that area, Sorrento is a
far, far more pleasant base.

Absolutely. With such a short time available - a sin! The area deserves one week
minimum! Up Vesuvius, the other archeological sites, etc. - you must see Pompeii and
the Amalfi coast, minimum. Capri was one of my biggest disappointmnents in the area.
