It seems odd to me.I travel often to Italy and Switzerland and I do
everything via email...never had a problem. I thought France would be
more up-to-date but maybe not.

Unless you are below average in intelligence, there is no reason why,
with application and hard work, you should not be "adept" in learning
languages.

However, you are too lazy to punctuate correctly, so I hold out little
hope for you.

Conforming to any norm is something France tries hard _not_ to do.

In my opinion if a hotel advertises on the internet, has an email
address for contact and does not get back to you when you send them an
email, feel very lucky you have a hotel that you can scratch off you
list. To me it is an indication of the quality of the hotel's service.

When I an inquiring about rooms at a hotel, using email, I will get a
email back in a few days informing they have room for me or not. Many
times they will not reply the next day but they will get back to me in
a few days.

For Paris I can highly recommend Hotel du Levant. A hotel I have stay
for a week and will again.

I was tempted to create a vacation through www.france-vacations.com before I decided on Barcelona
instead. Their prices look reasonable, and you can customize as you desire. The best part is you don't really
have to make reservations yourself.
If you're that hung up on having to deal with some receptionist, call a travel agent. They can take care of
everything for you so you can think about what to do when you get there -- *nudge, nudge* *wink, wink*
Good luck.

Wow - That's a rather harsh reaction. I would just book it on the
Internet - Travelocity or Expedia or what ever you like. That way you
will have no language difficulties, will have a confirmation in
writing & have someone to back you up if there's a problem. Or...
here's a novel idea - why don't you just use a travel agent? That's
what they do (& pretty well, too). A good Europe agent will have
great suggestions for hotels in your price range, know what rooms to
ask for - especially important for a honeymoon & will give you full
written confirmations & help at any point in the journey if problems
arise.

travel agents for the most part book people into costly charmless hotels
-- I am sure there are specialists who do better, but for the most part
they just go to the big books --- you will do much better booking
yourself after doing some research.

A hotel that fails to respond to Email should be scratched off -- it is
a son of indifferent service

As others have suggested, try writing in French. I did just that for a
trip to France last April that involved stays in chambres d'hotes only
(small b&b like establishments with a maximum of 6 rooms). Got replies
to faxes from most of them, even those which were full or out of the
business. I had to call a few to confirm.

Incroyable. Quant à moi, j'ai toujours trouvé que les Français veulent
bien me parler en anglais bien que je puisse m'exprimer bien en
français.

Il se peut que votre français soit incompréhensible.

If I were you I'd take that 10k and go to New Zealand, or Thailand, both places
very friendly and you get a whole lot more for your money.

I think it's probably more likely the hoteliers just haven't read their
email. It is surprisingly common for businesses to have an email address
but not actually make the cultural jump to using it.

Don't be put off. Unless YOU are pissed at France, go and enjoy
yourself.

And you, I suppose are willing and able to speak the to tourists in your
country in their native tongue? I pity the European who comes here while I
have had nothing but good luck in all but the most remote places that I
have traveled to in Europe finding English spoken and well.
