Help planning Italy trip
I find so many good suggestions here, I thought I'd ask before
planning our next trip... We will be going to Italy in mid-Sept for 2
weeks; landing in Milan and picking up a car. Returning from either
Rome or Milan. The first night will definately be in Como, as we have
a committment there with some old friends. We've been fortunate enough
to have been to San Remo, Milan, Venice, Florence, San Gimignano,
Lucca, Siena, and Rome other trips. So, here is my question. We
definately wish to spend a few days around the Lakes and return to
Florence for a day or 2 seeing a few things we missed last time. Other
than these, we are planning.. If you were charting this journey, where
would you go?
Thanks Liz

Venice, Lucca, Siena, and Rome. Unlike many others, I like going
back to places I've been to and love. As a matter of fact,
although I've been to Rome at least a dozen times, this
October-November we're going back to spend four weeks there.

Re: Help planning Italy trip
On your way to Florence you could stop in Parma, possibly in the morning to
visit the Cathedral square, the Baptistry and (open only to 2pm) the Farnese
Theatre.
You could have lunch at an open restaurant in the main square (Garibaldi
square), do some shopping in the afternoon and leave for Bologna.
Near Modena it is possible to visit the Ferrari factory (if you love that
kind of things...).

Re: Help planning Italy trip
Yes, I agree...Parma is a wonderful city...a very good stop indeed. I would
suggest a day or two in Bologna...just around la Piazza Maggiore you could
see...Il Palazzo del Podesta', La Fontana del Nettuno, San Petronio, the
Museo Civico Archeologico and Palazzo comunale. Don't forget to see the two
towers, Garlsenda and Asinelli..symbols of the city. And don't forget the
food...Bologna has great food. Just walking around the city and getting
lost is fun. The people are very nice there...
Farrara also has a very interesting Cattedrale as does Ravenna. Frome
Ravenna you can go to Forli', a pleasant small town...the superstrade is the
110 I think that will take you through the mountains and down to Firenze.
Along the way there are bathes....I can't remember the name right now...they
might be San Benedetto...but I am not sure...but it is a wonderful way to
spend a day before getting to Firenze. I hope this helps.
Buon viaggio!

Re: Help planning Italy trip
A couple of thing we wish we had done more of in Italy:
Spent more time in Rome,
Spent more time in Chianti
Watch the moon rise over the buildings while sitting in the Piazza il
Campo in Siena.

I recently spent a couple of days at Lake Maggiore. There is a small
island near Stresa
with a palace and elaborate gardens, called Isola Bella. It is well
worth a day trip. The lake ferries
stop there and there are tours in english of the palace.

Unless You have seen most of the world, wouldn't You think that by going
back to the same places You might miss the chance to know other places You
would love even more?

While I tend to like to go somewhere I haven't been, one could also ask, what
good it is to find someplace you love if you can never go back since you must
find a place you love better?

Of course, but it's all a matter of your personal philosophy.
Here's mine: if I do something I know I love, I have a 100%
chance of being happy. If I do something that's new to me, there
is some lower percentage of its resulting in my loving it.
So I frequently, but not always, repeat myself. I do new things
and go to new places too--just not always. I almost never regret
a vacation, and feel that I made a poor choice.
There are some people (I have very good friends like this) who
*never* do the same thing twice. They collect places they've been
to like stamps in an album--the more stamps they have the better;
they like to be able to say, "Oh, I've been there." With some
difficulty, I can understand that point of view, but it's not me.
