Default To and from Heathrow, London

I shall be staying in central London for a few days next month
and the transportation possibilities seem to be either taxi +
Heathrow Express (Paddington) or the HotelLink Shuttle. The
first might be a little more expensive with the taxi fare but
seems possibly faster since the train takes 15 minutes and runs
every 15 minutes and the shuttle time is estimated as 60-90
minutes every 30 minutes. Has anyone any recent experiences or
opinions about these alternatives?

I would suppose taking a taxi at a hotel to or from the airport
might be more expensive and not necessarily faster.

If your flight isnt at peak periods (7-10AM and 3-7 PM) weekdays
then the hotel shuttle should work fine but if you are coming
in from the airport on a weekday morning your bus could end
up spending over an hour sitting on the M-4 flyover.

In this circumstance I'd take the Heathrow Express, outside
peak I'd probably take the tube but then I lived in london for
more than 10 years and know the system.

Depends very much on where you are staying in London , how much luggage you
have, and what time of day/week you're travelling. The cheapest option, and
possibly even direct depending on where you're staying, is by Underground
(tube).
It may also be the fastest for you. If you provide more details readers
will be able to better advise you.

Many people use the Tube, here are the gory details:-

We used the Heathrow Express/Taxi combo to get to
our hotel in Bloomsbury, quick and less stressfull
than the shuttle or tube.
Returning we stayed at Paddington (royal Norfolk Hotel),
a three minute walk from the Heathrow Express platform.
Smooth ride straight to the terminal for easy e-ticket check-in.
Last month (april/May).

Where is your hotel? The fastest method (or the best compromise between
speed and cost) will depend on which part of London you need to reach.

take the tube, it brings you nearly to any place in London and it is a
good deal.

I have been using the tube on a daily basis for 35 years and I have never
used it to get to Heathrow.

The journey time from central London to T123 is 1.25 hours or thereabouts.
There is currently no service to T4. It is a nightmare when you have heavy
baggage. It is baking hot in summer. The only thing it has going for it is
cheapness, but I'd much rather spend the extra and be comfortable and swift.

From central London, the combination of cab to Paddington and Heathrow
Express can't, in my opinion, be beaten.

But has little or no facilities for luggage and at rush hour is
extremely crowded. If the OP is arriving mid week on an
early morning flight from the US I would NOT recommend
he use the tube.

In both these cases the extra expense of H'row Express may be worthwhile,
but the OP doesn't say where he is staying, and this can make a tremendous
difference to the most convenient and quickest means of travel. For example,
if he were staying in a hotel near Waterloo, the best route might well be
bus to Feltham and train to Waterloo.

Although it doesn't necessarily apply to the OP, this is not something
you want to try with much luggage if your flight gets into Heathrow
during the morning rush hour. The trains are absolutely packed, and
usually not designed for luggage. (It was very convenient for me as the
trains often stop at Clapham Junction, close to where I lived.)

Depends entirely on how much luggage one has. Traveling with
a carryon bag I find the tube no problem at all. Of course I
am a New Yorker and don't find crowded public transport daunting.
