Greek Islands water temperatures
When I visited Santorini and Naxos in early June 2003 the weather was
great but the water was freezing. That time of year is the water
noticably warmer in places like the southern coast of Create or
Rhodes? How about the other islands off the west coast of Turkey? I've
seen charts that show average water temperatures but the ranges are so
great that they're really not very helpful. Thanks.

I think you'll find there's a seasonal lag with water temperatures, ie
highest water temperature will occur a month or two after the warmest air
temperature. Look at
http://www.weatherbase.com/weather/w...s=023761&refer - you'll see
that the warmest months are July/August/September for Naxos. So you'd
expect warmest water temperatures around September/October, after the water
has had a chance to warm up.

Another point is that water temperatures for deep water do not tend to
have as much seasonal variation. A shallow water area like the US Gulf
Coast will have much warmer summer water temperatures than a deep water
area with similar climate.

We've been to Naxos three times in May and June. The sea surface
temperature depends on whether or not it has been stormy. If it hasn't
the sea is warmish, if it has it takes some days to warm up again.

That's relative. It's not at carribean (or Floridian) temperatures but
it's not freezing either.

Having been in Santorini and the south or Crete in early June, yes, I'd
say there is a slight difference with the latter being a tad warmer. I
don't know is that is borne out by statistics though.
I've only been to Naxos in September, and I found it quite warm then.

Ios in July is perfect. Either that or I was really really drunk.
