Antwerp pupils to eat halal meat
Mon 12/02/07 - Antwerp community schools will from now on only serve
halal food on their school outings. The news of the new measure
appeared in today's edition of De Morgen.
A few days ago, all parents with children in Antwerp community schools
received a letter.
In the letter, the school headmasters explain that from now on, there
will be no more pork on the menu during school outings.
In addition to that, all meat will be ritually slaughtered in
accordance with Islamic law.
Robert Voorhamme
(Belga)
Robert Voorhamme
The measure has shocked a great number of parents. They believe local
community schools should remain neutral and not obey a law imposed by
one or other religion.
The Antwerp alderman for Education, Robert Voorhamme (Flemish
socialist) says he doesn't understand what all the fuss is about.
"We could just as easily have kept this silent", he says.
"It's not because we serve halal food that the food is actually
different. It certainly doesn't taste different."
Mr Voorhamme says that serving halal food is the only way to get
islamically raised children to take part in extra-curricular
activities.
Until now, many children stayed at home because their parents feared
their child wouldn't eat the right sort of meat.
In Islam, it's forbidden or 'haram' to eat pork.
What does 'halal' mean?
Muslims can only eat meat that has been slaughtered in the name of
Allah. In the same respect, the slaughter man too has to be a Muslim.
Islam further prescribes that the animals should be killed in a pure
environment and the killing should be executed in the direction of the
holy city of Mecca.
At the start of the killing, the slaughter man has to say the words
"In the name of Allah" and "Allah is great".
Muslims also accept meat that was slaughtered in the name of god by
Christians or Jews as halal.
Even fish can be halal, even when the animal wasn't killed in the name
of Allah.

Why don't the Muslim kids just take pre-packed food that their parents have
prepared for them instead of everyone having to conform to their ways?

Because the parents don't want to do their job. They want *someone else* (read "the rest
of us") to do it for them. Simple.

That is the fault of the faceless stupid idiots who make these sort of
decisions, not the parents.
Should airlines only provide one sort of food too?
Why don't all the kids take prepacked lunches?

Because it's not the faceless stupid idiots who have to prepare said lunches - it's the
parents, and parents don't want to do it. GOT IT NOW?

STOP SHOUTING AND STAMPING YOUR FOOT.
Parents prepare packed lunches for their kids all over Europe only a few
countries provide school meals.
