If you can get Airport cabs to drop you off in Crawley for 10 gbp you are
doing very well, whilst it has a fair number of shops Crawley isn't (IMHO
and I live there) the greatest of shopping centres.
The Gatwick express takes 30 mins to Victoria which is about half the time
it takes to get from Heathrow to Victoria. There is also the Thameslink if
you want to go into the City and visit St Pauls.
If it was me I would go the other way to Brighton (about 30 mins on a semi
fast train) and head for the Lanes, I prefer the North Lanes but have never
seen the Lesbian sex shop will look out for it next time we are down there
but Brighton is not great if the weather is poor.
Gatwick Zoo has now closed, been told they are in the process of building
houses on the site but haven't been there for a couple of years.
But you don't have a lot of time even with everything in your favour you
will have less then 2 hours somewhere with the slightest delay this will
probably be nearer 1 hour.

A bit earlier! The Prince Regent (later George IV) built it. (George III
had famously gone barmy in his old age, and his son ruled as Prince
Regent for quite a while befoer the old boy dies and he became George
IV.)

*Actually* Sussex is no longer a county (or a counry), try West Sussex or
East Sussex.
And please don't ask me if it is in West Sussex or in Surrey but it is
definately near the border.
I do know however that many years ago (before I had a mobile phone) some of
the pay phones had London numbers and some had Crawley numbers - you could
waste (or save) a small fortune if you called from the wrong (right) ones.
Some interesting facts about Gatwick below:

Actually , looking at an (admittedly not-very-large-scale) map it
appears the airport may be right on the border, whereas Crawley is
definitely in W. Sussex.

Gatwick is in West Sussex it comes under Crawley.
The boundaries commission redefined the borders (approximately 20 years ago,
I think maybe more) before then Gatwick used to come under Horley (Surrey),
Horley was also supposed to come under Crawley but there were numerous
objections to this so Horley remained in Surrey and are now controlled by
Reigate and Banstead.

That's probably why post sorted at Gatwick takes so long to get sorted!
We mailed a postcard First Class from Gatwick to an address 30 miles away.
We sent a postcard from Greece 2 days later to the same address. They
arrived on the same day!

The county should matter for Post - It'd go to Redhill for sorting.
Was the destination in the RH post district ?

No, GU (Guildford) - same county as RH.
But mail from the south coast to us seems to bear a Gatwick postmark, so I
assume that's where it's sorted.
There are other funnies around here. Post from Slough (Berks.) to us
(Surrey, 10 miles away) apparently goes to Bristol (Gloucs. or now its own
county thingy?) for sorting!
