It's updated today- this caught my eye:
"Did I say that smoking was prohibited everywhere? That's not quite
true. Gutless politicians caved in to a few pressure groups, notably
restaurants and bars, which feel that they'll go out of business if
smoking is completely prohibited (even though smoke-free restaurants and
bars seem to be doing just fine)."
I thought that the ban in bars and restaurants had simply been delayed
until December. What's the story on this?

Perhaps he was lurking, hoping we wouldn't spot him.

Right. But the smoking is out everywhere else. One notes in walking
around Paris, the number of smokers standing outside office buildings
puffing away.
One problem is the accumulation of cigarette butts in front of
the buildings. The city is telling those responsible for the building
cleaning to clean up those too.
This occurs in two areas without a block of where we
live in Paris. One is a technical school in front of which the "kids"
stand smoking. The young take up the habit partially to show they
are now grown up.
When the "no smoking" campaign started years ago, it first was
initiated in the metro. Resistance there consisted of some young
rebels smoking not only on the quai but in the cars. They
were making a statement but nobody was listening. That
practice has long disappeared. Cigar smoking in restaurants
dropped off to mostly zero in the last 10 years. Most
restaurants only offered small no-smoking area, usually
within a few feet of the smoking areas. Being slightly
asthmatic I sometimes have a minor attack when I start
breathing smoke (tear gas is worse!) so I am careful about
where to sit. Even in the smoking areas I normally don't
have a problem. But in densely seated cafes it is a
problem.
So top chefs send out the "message" "please do not smoke
before eating my great food" Like apéritifs smoking
kills the palate and you might as well eat mush.

It is called Global Climate Change, not global warming, because the
old name confused lay people into expecting an even temperature rise
over the entire earth. Science predicts weather EXTREMES, not a gentle
even warming.
