All light rail transit will be shut down because it takes most of the money
required to greatly reduce CO2 transportation pollution and to make the
transition to alternative fuels for cars that won't produce CO2

The estimates are that technology will allow the US to cut its CO2 emissions
by 60% to 80% . Kyoto with its mainly conservation and anti-technology
biases will be lucky to cut CO2 by more than a percent or two.

First sentence, bullshit. Second, about right.

What technology could possibly reduce CO2 emmisions that much?

Estimates by the technological optimists that thought we'd all be
flying jet packs by now.

Why, George Jetson personal flying cars with ITS, of course. Get with
the program!

Of course, if I remember my Saturday morning cartoons correctly, George
Jetson lived in a housing unit built *above* smog.

The technology is things like genetic engineering to produce microbes that
turn cellulose waste into alcohol or hydrogen would possible be distributed
as metallic fuels which can store far more energy per cubic foot than
hydrogen by itself.

Nanosolar is producing quantum dot on thing plastics to make solar energy
far cheaper. Being funded by a lot money including the two guys that
started Google.

Of course nuclear is on going to be pushed heavily .

It is amazing what cant be done when very smart people are combined with
lots of money. Kyoto is missing those key ingredients.

Interesting fact is that as driving increases, the pollution from
automobiles continues to drop rapidly
http://www.highways.org/Mar06-speaker-slideshows/Schwartz.ppt#15

The reason is that as cars are driven more, they wear out faster and are
replaced with newer cars. Pollution levels in cars is dropping quickly
with pollution technology in cars continues to improve quickly.

Of course even if people actually ever use transit very much, the pollution
levels would be higher because older cars with higher pollution levels would
not be replaced as quickly as now.

Kyoto has both very smart people and a lot of money. You should visit
the place!

Seriously, trying to shorten the title of the agreement to just
"Kyoto" is just asking to be misunderstood. :-)

I still don't know where you got that 60% - 80% number.

I'm not quite so confident that technology will provide us with
something bigger and better in the future. Whenever I talk to people
about the 'end of oil' there always seems to be this "science will
hopefully fix it" line coming out. I find it a bit unnerving that hope
is the current strategy.

I subscribe to a professional magazine (Chemistry and Chemical Engineering
News) which deals periodically with the global warming issue.

I have never seen that kind of reduction in CO2 emissions projected
in the near to intermediate picture. Worse, although the oil production
will peak out and diminish in this century, there are large large deposits
of coal still around, the US in particular This will be burnt and so the
CO2 put into the atmosphere will continue to rise. It is currently at 380
ppm and increasing at about 1.5 ppm per year, some acceleration of this
figure has been detected. As the ocean warms its capacity to absorb
CO2 will diminish. This plus the 3rd world polluting more will assure
that the 1.5 ppm will be maintained, and perhaps increase more.

So by 2020 the 400 ppm mark will be reached and by the end of 2100
the figure will pass 500 ppm. The amount of global warming will
probably reach the high end of the range anticipated, like +6-8C.

Nothing is likely to stop this increase.

There has been some talk, and only talk of pumping the CO2
under ground or depositing it as the bottom of the ocean
in the form of CO2 hydrates (the 4C temperature and pressures
permitting this for form).

Makes no real difference. Photosynthesis has not kept up with
man's junking the air with CO2. The ocean has responded by
by heating up and slowing downs its own CO2 absorption. While on
land, the heating up of the tundra areas are pouring CO2 into`the
atmosphere. And in the rain forest areas, they are cutting down
trees to building garden furniture for the go figs of this world.

Do we in fact grow green things, Yes, Look at the three first
