Default getting to england...

Hey guys!

I'm from Spain, and I'd like to get to England this summer. I'd like
to do it by car. Which is the best way? Is it possible to go directly
from Calais to Dover by car, or the tunnel is just for the train? If
so, which is the best way to pass the car? How much is the ferry?

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks, Juan

Only the train actually goes through the tunnel, but you can buy a ticket to
drive your car onto the train, which then takes it through (actually it
comes out at Folkestone, not Dover).

For the prices:

Well, there are two direct overnight ferries from Bilbao to Portsmouth and
Santander to Plymouth. It's expensive, though, around £600-700 return for a
family cabin and car.
Most Britons use longer crossings to and from Normandy, Le Havre/Cherbourg
to Portsmouth, Caen to Portsmouth, Cherbourg to Poole, and St Malo
(Brittany) to Portsmouth. Slightly cheaper, from around £400 return. The
cheapest and shortest is Dover-Calais by ferry, Hoverspeed or Eurotunnel,
around £200-300, but you have much longer drive through Northern France. It
all depends if you are sharing driving, or want to use the journey as part
of your holiday by stopping off en route. Depending on where you are
starting in Spain, it takes between 2 and 3 days of driving to England, if
you don't take direct overnight crossing.

Wow, it's more expensive than i expected.

I share driving, yes, my girlfriend also drives, but she's a bit
rookie, so I think I should take most of the driving time.

The starting point in Spain? Murcia, which is around 800 or 900 km
from the French border. A long trip, isn't it?

And, I'd also like to use the journey as part of my holidays, by
stopping everywhere, and visiting many places.

But, we've add all the expenses of the trip... and perhaps we're going
closer. We're thinking about Chamonix, and the alps. What do you guys
think about this?

See you

Good idea, though the Alps is very different from England. If you are going
in the summer, you can stay in skiing resorts quite inexpensively, and there
are some great hikes to be had. Cablecar ride to Aiguille du Midi is
spectacular in clear weather, though expensive (around 55 euro). For
Chamonix, the quickest and most direct route would be Barcelona, Perpignan,
Montpellier, Valance to Chamonix, all autoroutes, about 890 miles.
