Default getting to Duino

I'm trying to sort out a trip from Vancouver to Duino (near Trieste). It
would seem impossible to fly to Trieste airport in fewer than three hops
(unless I transfer from Heathrow to the Ryanair flight from Stansted).

An alternative would be to fly into Venice.

What are the options, therefore, regarding travel from Venice airport to
Duino?

Any other advice most welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Take care

Jon

Shuttle or bus from Marco Polo Airport to Venezia St. Lucia (central)
or Venezia Mestre (suburb) train station, than train to Trieste
Centrale. (Almost) hourly departures, mostly direct trains, journey
takes appx. two hours. Check www.bahn.de, also in english.

    >From Trieste, local bus or taxi to Duino/Devin (Devin: Duino in
slovenian). Very close to Trieste. While there, don't miss a walk over
the cliffs to Sistiana (Rilke's path). Veeery scenic, high above
Adriatic, beautiful vistas.

As you noticed, alternative is London Stansted - Ronchi airport
(Trieste) by Ryanair, than some local transport to Duino, maybe taxi:
Ronchi airport is very close to Duino.

Another alternative is London Heathrow - Ljubljana (Slovenia) by Adria
Airways, then bus (20km) to Ljubljana railway/bus station, bus or train
to Trieste, local transport to Duino.

This is about it. I think flying into Venice would be the best choice.

The proximity of the airport in Venice to Venezia Mestre, the "Mainland"
station makes it a pretty good choice. Using Milan/Malpensa would not be
bad and maybe quicker (non-stop service out of several North American
cities), and the train is fast and comfortable, but the hangup is the hour
or so from Malpensa to the Central Station (Hourly departures to Venice and
adequate service on to Trieste). There's a train from the airport in but,
IIRC, it reqires a change to get to Centrale.

Many thanks for this. I have indeed decided on going via Venice--and
booked the flights: LH via Frankfurt. NB it was a *lot* cheaper booking
the flights separately (i.e. buying YVR-FRA and FRA-VCE as separate
itineraries). I'm not quite sure why that should be.

I checked out www.bahn.de and trenitalia, and was left somewhat confused.
Do all trains from Venezia St. Lucia also go through Mestre?

It seems in fact that I should get off the train at Monfalcone. I'll get
a taxi from there.

Hehe, I already bought the Duino sonnets in preparation.

Hmm, I have a free day and hadn't thought about it, but going to Slovenia
would be interesting. Well, I suppose I have to choose between Venica,
Solvenia, and Padova.

Take care and thanks again

Lots of intersting places in the district. Have a look at Aquilaea if
you have time- between Venice and Trieste - old Roman ruins and the
fascinating Cathedral with the floor frescoes preserved by a millennia
under the mud.

Think so. St. Lucia is a "blind railroad" into town itself. It is
within like five minutes walking from Rialto bridge and not more than
15 minutes walking from Piazza San Marco.

Might as well. It should take like ten minutes to Duino. But, you'll
skip Trieste, which is also a nice town. Trieste used to be imperial
(austro - hungarian) port no.1 and it should be nice to explore its
center for a couple of hours.

Well, then enjoy Rilke's poetry on the very spot that it was created.

ONE DAY for one of the most beautiful corners of the world? Just joking
(but not about this being one of the most beautiful corners of the
world, hehe).

If it is so, then Venezia is a must, of course.

Padova is also a beautiful town, so is Aquilea (the lighthouse of
Christianity in this part of the world after the fall of Rome).

What would be close in Slovenia? Maybe this:

UNESCO world heritage. Breathtaking. When talking about Karst caves,
there's another in Postojna (30 min from Trieste by car). Also
something very special.

Have a nice trip!

Who wrote those, then?

(Rilke's _Duino Elegies_ are conspicuously not sonnets; I just
finished reading them in preparation for a planned trip there of my
own. I realised afterwards, though - with no little irritation - that
I do not know German.)

True, and with its own literary associations... Where Joyce wrote at
least part of Ulysses, and home of Itale Svevo. I'm looking forward to
seeing something of it.

I know, I know... but needs must and so forth. I have in fact been to
Venice and Padova before (which isn't to say I wouldn't go back, of
course).

Hmm, Aquilea sounds interesting.

And will check this out, too.

Again, many thanks

Many thanks to all for their advice on getting to Duino. I just got back,
and it was a fine trip. Duino itself is something of a one-horse town,
but has a bar and some fine dining. The castle is definitely worth
looking around. I liked Trieste, too (though failed dismally in my
attempts to locate James Joyce's house). Venice I only saw in the cold,
wet, windy, and dark of a Sunday night, but that was OK.

And OBrta, in Venice the Lufthansa check-in staff weighed my hand luggage,
declared it had to be checked, and (surprise?!) while I made the
connection in Frankfurt, the bag didn't. They claim it will be arriving
this evening. This is the second trip in a row in which exactly the same
thing has happened (though last time it was United). Grrr.

Take care

Jon
