Getting around Amsterdam

I'm going to try a (hopefully) less inflamatory thread than my
previous Thanksgiving thread.
Anyway, I'll be arriving in Schiophol, and taking the train in to
Amsterdam. The next day, I have a car reserved in Amsterdam at the
Europcar office on Overtoom 197. Any suggestions on where to find
information on how to get from the area around Central Station to the
Overtoom location. I'm interested in knowing if there is an online
guide to busses, or should I hire a taxi for this trip?
Thanks,
Boris

Take a tram. Once you have the car, the next problem will be finding
somewhere to park it. You are probably better off without a car in
A'dam.

I assume you are leaving Amsterdam that same day, because you sure don't
want a car there.
You can get to Overtoom on Tram #1 from Centraal Station. Or go on foot,
it's a nice walk; about 45 minutes to an hour from Centraal Station at
tourist pace or half an hour at an urban clip.

An urban clip??
Like from a Clint Eastwood movie?

The trams ... and even just walking ... around A'dam are VERY easy. Most folks
seem to speak English better than a lot of Americans too, so don't worry too
much. You can ask at the tourist information centers right near Centraal, and
they will gladly help you out. I hope you're renting a car because you are
going elsewhere in the country. Inside the city it seems like it would be more
aggrevation than it's worth. There is some AMAZING countryside there, however.

Don't worry too much, I thought your thanksgiving question was a
legitimate one.
As for planning your public transport trips: I usually use

Tram 1 will take you from Centraal Station to and along the Overtoom, and it
will cost you 3 euros, or two strips on a strippenkaart.
It's a very straightforward trip, not worth catching a taxi.

Getting the car will be easy. As others have mentioned, just take tram #1 to
the Overtoom. Europcar will be on the left side of the street, very easy to
find.
Finding your way whilst driving will probably much harder. Where do you need
to take the car after you picked it up?

Boris, please don't use a car to get around in Amsterdam. You will hate
yourself. You would be better off renting an elephant. Only rent a car
if you are going straight out of town.

If you are staying in amsterdam or are only visiting the netherlands
in my opinion it would be a very bad idea to have a car. The tram,
busses and train systems are easy to learn and use. Parking will be a
major hassle and unless you have arranged free parking with the hotel
you are staying at fairly expensive 20-30 euros a night.
I live in the usa and do not use what little public transportation
that there is in my area. I had no trouble figuring out how to get
around. To get to overtoom take tram #1 and get off at the Jan
Pieterstraat (sp?) ask the tram driver and they will let you know.
Most place are easy enough to walk to although walking from centraal
station to overtoom is a long walk, 2 miles, but I have done it
before. Lots and Lots of interesting things to see.

I haven't heard this but it makes sense. Problem is, Rome seems to be
the closest place with elephant rentals - can anyone suggest anything
closer? I'd prefer an Indian elephant as I hear they get better mileage.
Thanks.

Hi,
in fact almost everywhere in amsterdam is an easy tram ride.
either that or take a bike (bike rentals at centraal station are out the
front door, take a hard left, and they're in the basement under the
large blue bicycle sign).
the only reason to take a cab is luggage I think.

Tram line 1 goes direct from Central station to Overtoom. Come out of
the station, line 1 goes from the right- hand side.
