I found Verdun extremely interesting. The battlefield is still scarred
with craters. There is an excellent museum there and you can tour the
old fortifications. We had an interesting meal at the Auberge au Feu de
Bois in the little town just north of the but it's name escapes me.

We also enjoyed Reims, and found the countryside to be very scenic (mid
May).

I would stop off in Burgundy and base in or near Beaune. The are some
low cost motels on the southern outskirts of Dijon.

Do not miss Troyes, especially if you're interested in architecture and old
towns.

Take the tour of the Mumm champagne cellars in Reims. A few blocks away
is the schoolhouse where the Nazi surrender was signed. It is a museum
and the room in which the surrender was signed is unchanged.
