I've ridden on it several times. The funicular is more or less a cross
between an elevator and a trolley. There are two cars connected by a
cable, running on rails inclined fairly steeply; when one car ascends
the hill, the other one descends. The funicular runs to a small town
named Brunate on the top of the hill east of Como.
Whether it's worth it depends on one's tastes and what one expects to
do in Brunate. For my money, the views while riding the funicular
stand out (even in a region where spectacular views are routine) and
having lunch al fresco in Brunate (much quieter than Como, and cooler
in the summer) is wonderful. Those factors make it worth it for my
wife and me. I believe that there are also some trails for walking
that originate in Brunate, but I've never done those, so I can't
comment on them.
Regards,
George

When you are facing the lake near the park where is Volta museum, its
on the right (North ?) very near from the shore. The funicular passes
through the mountain like in Orvieto or Capri. There is a belvedere
from the teraces surrounding the headline's station with an interesing
view on the city and the lake. A little path (rather physical, but not
so long) leads higher to Volta lighthouse on the other side of the
mountain. Erected at the very edge of an extremely vertical and high
cliff (700 m?) it offers a spectacular view on the river Po plain, a
more natural part of the lake and the Alps snowy summits, for those
who are not subject to vertigo...
