Default French travel

Hello All - I'll be travelling a bit outside of Paris this summer -
but I'll need to stay reasonably close to the capital. All travel will
be done by rental car. Can anyone recommend chateaux, tours, and
regions to consider?

Provins is really neat, especially if you have children! There is a
beautiful white castle in the city of Pierrefond

Thanks so much for the input. A couple more questions...

Are there such things as "... more affordable chateaux"?

I've been thinking that a nice side trip might be to drive out to
Dijon - staying at a chateaux along the way for a couple nights - then
drop the rental car off in Dijon and ride the train back to Paris. Any
input?

Obviously given the previous question, I've been thinking about
travelling in the direction of Dijon. Can you recommend better
regional travelling (other than Normandy)?

Any tips on renting cars in France?

Any tips for Bastille Day in Paris?

Thanks again!

Don't forget about Monet's house and gardens at Giverny.

If you just want to wander and see what is available nearby, you can find
a dozen or more spots of interest.

You can spend a nice day in Fontainebleau and its surroundings.
Fontainebleau : the castle, Napoleon's time history and art museum, a
curious jail museum, centre sportif equitation militaire (cavalry sport
center)

Milly

Its ancient market hall, St Blaise des simples chapel, Cyclop sculpture,
conservatoire des plants aromatiques (medicinal plants garden), small
streets and restaurants.

Barbizon.

If you have children and they tire of chteaux there's always
Disneyland! You don't need a car to get there you can take the
commuter train, RER, the line is the A4; there is a very large and
very chic shopping mall in Val d'Europe which is the 2nd to last stop
before Disneyland.

Local renters sometimes have poor support and old cars.

Perhaps why they are cheaper.

Try to buy a copy of english language version of the Burgundy green
Michelin Guide. A place where you can find many maps and guides.

Where will you rent your car ? At arrival at airport (CDG?) ? Or later in
town ? Will you drop it at the same point ?
National wide rent agency tend to have better conditions if you do not
leave the car at the place you rented it.
Local renters are cheaper.
In july and august business oriented car renting offices have less
activity and offer discounts.
Renting a car is easy. European generaly use manual gears. Automatic
models are more scarse. Cars are smaller than in the US. But some small
cars are really fited even for long trips, it depends on the model. Do not
rent a too small car. In july air conditionning is a must, generally not a
problem, verify.

Paris city information not yet available for 2007. Expect fireworks (near
tour Eiffel) and open air balls on major places (bastille place).

Quote : Bastille Day: 14 July
The French National holiday celebrates 14 July 1789 and the French
Revolution. A huge military parade on the Champs-Elyses, in the presence
of the French President, draws crowds of spectators. In Paris and all over
France, this major popular celebration is witness to spectacular firework
displays and fun-filled dances on the evening of 13 July, especially those
held in local fire stations.
