Default France Spain toll roads

Do I need a special "pass" (vignette) to drive on some roads in France
and Spain? if so, where can I get one. I'll be arriving in Madrid and
renting a car there and returning it there after three weeks but will
be driving to France.

No "pass", that's don't mean free ! You pay on each tollgate. For
France for example, spain to Paris (round 800 kms) is 30 / 40 euros

No vignette, pay as you go. Either cash, or CC. CC is simpler.

Vignette was introduced years ago in Switzerland, Austria
and since also a few other countries mainly in Eastern
Europe.

France, Spain (and Italy) have toll-roads with toll-boots:
pay cash or by credit card - and drivers often enough
loose time waiting .....
Automatic systems are available (transponders to be
rented), but dont make sense when driving on the highways
only once in a while.
More on "telepeage" at http://www.autoroutes.fr/ and

Roadplanners such as www.viamichelin.com display
also prices for all toll-sections
