France: Annecy or Chambery
Hello,
My bf and I are looking to travel through France. We will be in the
Alps area and we want to spend a few days there. Any good experience
that someone would like to share?
Also, I have heard that Annecy was a nice city, we re hesitating
between Annecy and Chambery. Can anyone advise us? Which one is more
charming and nice?
Thank you very much
titi

Haven't been to Chambery but Annecy is beautiful. The town itself is a bit
"twee" and touristy but the villages round the Lake itself are wonderful. We
spent a week in Talloires last June and it was really nice. I can recommend
the Cafe de la Place there, run by two ladies. Quintessentially French, or
at least we think so! I don't think you would regret a visit to Lake Annecy
at all. If you decide to go there, I can send a few shots we took to give
the flavour of the place.

I would opt for Annecy for charm. Chambery has resorty areas but itself is
not the attraction of Annecy. the rows of rowboats the park by the lake,
the river running through it. Oh Darn, I can't go this week!

Hi Titi,
I am originally from Lyon (also very nice to visit...)
You cannot go wrong with Annecy especially in the summer, there is
plenty to do in terms of outdoor activities. After all it is the home
town of Salomon. The lake offers a lot of water activities +
'parapente' (hanggliding). If you are visiting Annecy early June,
don't miss the Animation Film Festival (6/2 through 6/7), it is a real
treat.
Chambery is probably not as touristy as Annecy although it is well
known for its surrounding moutains and national parks (Vanoise
National Park for example). Don't miss the Chateau des Ducs, a nice
castle located in downtown Chambery.
By the way, Chamonix is also a must if you are planing to visit the
Alps area.
Voila, hope this info does not add too much confusion...

Annecy by far. Beautiful lake and river setting. Great old town area.
Touristy yes but then the great places always are. That's why they are
touristy.

Re: France: Annecy or Chambery
Annecy is a very pretty little town. A nice place just to hang out, sit at a
cafe on the river and sip something. Their is a boat tour of the lake. The
reason we were there, however, was to go the Chamonix and take the cable car
(or whatever it is called) to the top of the Aguille du Midi. One must catch
an early train, if not driving, and change to another one before getting to
Chamonix. Word of advice. When you get there, if the cable car is operating,
take the trip to the mountaintop first. The weather can change in a moment
and the cable car will not run. We made this mistake and consequently did
not get to the mountaintop. Also take a warm jacket, it gets very cold up
there.
