Siena deserves more than one day, but you can easily "do" Pisa in one day because the
most spectacular things are in one location: The Campo dei Miracoli. If you have more
time, there's more stuff, but that's the best Pisa has to offer.
By contrast, in Siena, you should walk through the Piazza del Campo, visit the museum
in the Palazzo Publico, go to the Duomo and Baptistry, and also the Pinacoteca. And
you should do more walking, for example walking on the Banchi di Sopra past the
Palazzo Salimbeni and the Via di Citta past the Palazzo Chigi (Accademia Chigiana). I
think that Siena deserves 3 days. My only caveat is that perhaps so many of the
paintings in the Pinacoteca are grossly overcleaned that you might not be able to see
much. It was already going that way in a big way the last time I was there in 1998,
and it pained me greatly.
Siena is much more beautiful than Pisa, but the Campo Santo and the Baptistry in Pisa
are truly spectacular. The Campo Santo was damaged during World War II when the Nazis
used it to store ammunition IIRC and it was hit by Allied bombing, but you can still
see the Triumph of Death by Traini, which is one of the best fresco cycles I've seen
so far. It contains the most frightening picture of Hell I've ever seen.

I totally agree. Pisa is "quicker"... and the leaning tower is now open to tourists
again (but it's likely you have to book in advance). Siena and its marvelous
countryside deserve some days (3 to 5 to me).

How long will you staying in Florence and where do your interests
lie.
If you're interested in art, there's a *lot* to see in Florence. Unless you're
staying a long time, you may not want to give up any of your time there.
On the other hand, it's well worth going to both Pisa and Siena. Siena's sights are
concentrated in one small area--the Campo dei Miracoli--and it's esy to see them all
in a day trip. Siena, on the other hand, is a wonderful town that's worth a fairly
extended visit on its own. You can easily spend much more than a day there.
I actually prefer Siena to Florence. It's a warmer, less modern city. To me the lure
of Florence is not the city itself, but the art that's within it. In Siena, I love
the city. We've been to both several times, and going to both again at the end of
this month. We'll be spending more time in SIena than in Florence this trip.

Hi
Since you will be in Italy later this month and have previous experiences - what do
you think the weather will be like Rome-Florence-Venice? Much rain?
Thanks D

Although I'm not a fan of bustours, they have tours that leave Florence at ~2PM and
return ~7PM that go to Pisa. Spent the day in Florence to ~1PM, grab a quick lunch
and leave from the near the train station. Get a 2hr guided tour of the Tower, Duomo
and Baptistery and be back in Florence for dinner. Your hotel most likely will be
happy to arrange this, they get a commission. For Siena I would do a long daytrip,
leave early-return late. Regards, Walter

What might a 'General Strike' entail?? Would this be a horrible day to arrive

Yes, Siena has "more" to it than Pisa--especially don't miss the Enoteca Nazionale with its hundreds of wines to taste--but if you're one of the lucky few to climb the tower in Pisa again it's worth anything...you won't believe how surprisingly creepy and disconcerting it is!
