Default flights Venice to Zurich

I would appreciate any recommendations for inexpensive flights from Venice to
Zurich, one-way. Right now, the fares that I have been able to locate are
ridiculously high, there must be decent fares on some airlines....I will be
travelling next May. Thanks.

Have you considered taking a train ? While not that fast (more than 7
hours) and not direct it can be quite scenic.

The simplest/fastest route seems to be via Milan with one change (there
appears to be also one through train to Zurich and a through train from
Venice to Arth Goldau ... it passes through Milan but for Zurich you
change once only in Arth Goldau ... smaller station and easier change).
That will be the less scenic one (no scenery from Venice to Milan and
Como-Chiasso, and the Alps crossing via the Gotthard route is moderately
scenic).

Otherwise you might go via Verona-Trento-Bolzano-Innsbrueck (all the
Adige valley to the Brenner pass is quite scenic ... for a more complex
variation you could take the Valsugana route, a minor railway line from
Venice to Trento and change there). Then from Innsbrueck the Austrian
part via the Vorarlberg is rather scenic. There should be some direct
trains from Innsbrueck to Zurich via Feldkirch, otherwise a change in
Bregenz is likely.

More scenic routes (e.g. using Bernina, Albula or Vereina) are not easy
from Venice (to do it all by train you'd have to go to Milan and then
"back" to Sondrio-Tirano, otherwise you'd have to cross the mountains
between Trento and Tirano by bus).

Have a look at this rail planner

Do not forget that the rail price one way will likely be cheaper than
any flight, at least between VCE and ZRH. I looked into this last year
for our rail tour of Austria and Switzerland and concluded it was much
cheaper to go by train. Due to some changes in our schedule we finally
did Graz to Zurich by train. You can go to the website for either the
Venice or Zurich airport and find out what airlines travel from the
airport. Then check those airline websites to see if they have a flight
to the other city and what the cost is.
