....and it wasn't Air Madrid......

First Spanish flight lands in Gibraltar
Reuters Saturday December 16, 04:37 PM

GIBRALTAR (Reuters) - The first flights between Madrid and Gibraltar
started on Saturday, following a landmark deal between Spain and
Britain who have disputed ownership of the Rock on Spain's south coast
for three centuries.

The daily service by Spanish flag carrier Iberia comes after a
September agreement between Spain, Britain and Gibraltar in September
to cooperate to solve the problems of
the British-ruled territory and the surrounding area.

The Iberia flight landed at 1200 GMT (12 p.m. British time) making
history as the first Spanish plane to touch down there and marking a
thawing in the long-running dispute.

Opening up Gibraltar's airport -- which Spain says is on land not ceded
to Britain under the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713 -- should benefit the
Spanish side of the border, which is underdeveloped compared with the
rest of the Costa del Sol.

Until now, anyone wanting to fly to Gibraltar from Madrid had to go via
London or travel to another airport on Spain's south coast and continue
by land.

A new terminal, due to be completed in 2008, will have entrances on
both sides of the border so passengers and cargo travelling to and from
Spain can bypass Gibraltar controls and taxes.

DEGREE OF NORMALITY

"This means a greater degree of normality. Both sides have protected
the issues that are important to them, but we have worked on the space
in between to deliver practical benefits to citizens on both sides of
the border," Gibraltar's Chief Minister Peter Caruana told a news
conference after the flight had landed.

Bernardino Leon, Spain's secretary of state for foreign affairs, said
as he set foot on disputed soil, that Saturday was an historic day.

"I think we are stepping onto the soil of co-operation. This is what is
important for Spain. We have decided to leave aside our traditional
positions," he told Reuters.

One passenger, Gibraltarian Johnny Bugeja, who was flying back to
Madrid the same day, said the flight had made history for him.

"We made a journey in one hour that has always taken a day."

Britain and Spain once looked at sharing sovereignty of the Rock, home
to 28,000 people. But in a referendum four years ago 99 percent of
Gibraltarians voted against the move, demanding to remain part of
Britain.

I'm just thinking though- if MAD (the brand new amazing airport with a
floor area greater than the size of Texas) wasn't already busy enough,
they'll be bursting at the seams now that this busy new route's been
added.

What is there to dispute. It was taken in a fair fight by the Royal Marines,
under Admiral Sir George Rooke, in 1704 and is clearly laid out in the
Treaty of Uterecht which was signed in 1713.

Not really much of a dispute. Spain was defeated and signed a treaty
ceding the land to Great Britian, and in a referendum on the subject,
99% of residents stated their loyality to the British Crown.

The Rock is, and will remain part of Great Bitian.

Except it's neither part of (the geographical entity) Great Britain
nor part of (the political entity) the United Kingdom. It's an
Overseas Territory (which is how we refer to the Colonies these days).

This distinction is why the Spanish claim that the situation with
Ceuta and Melilla is totally different - those enclaves being part
of the Spanish state.

It's called democracy. The inhabitants of Gibraltar and the Falklands want
to remain British colonies, and therefore they should be able to.

The British foreign office fiercly disagree: Gibraltar will be annexed to
Spain anyways.
